(My computer crashed this weekend and I'm doing this from my phone - sorry for the low-tech!)

Marking Period Ends on Friday.  This Friday, the 1st marking period ends.  Please make sure that Skedula is updated with all of your grades.  Stay tuned for emails giving you specific instructions for how to upload.  If any students are failing this marking period, please make sure to reach out to families to let them know what steps to take to intervene at home and please make sure that you schedule individual emergency conferences to make students aware of failure.  Also, please make sure to take the opportunity to celebrate success!   Call home to congratulate students on their achievement for this marking period!

Soft Lock Down Drill.  We will be having our first soft lock down drill on Wednesday morning.  We will be reviewing procedures during Monday's PD.  Please make sure that you have updated your emergency UAI folders with current rosters and that your folders are ready with the red/green/medical cards to notify admin of your needs.  We will review these on Monday.

First School Assemblies.   This week and next we will have our first school assemblies for the year.  Jen and Damon have been hard at work for the high school and Sursattie and Tracy have been hard at work for the middle school.  Please reach out to them with any questions you may have!

UAI Walks to Support Breast Cancer Awareness in Prospect Park!
Class of 2016 Visits Brooklyn College

End of the MP 1.  It's hard to believe that we're almost done with October!  That means that there are only two more weeks left in the 1st marking period (MP 1 ends on Friday, 30OCT15).  Please make sure you are regularly entering grades into Skedula so that students have access to how they are doing in your class.  Please make sure to schedule emergency conferences with any students who are in danger of failing your class.  Also, remember to schedule emergency conferences with the high achievers who are kinda slacking!  Additionally, this is the time to begin selecting student work for display.  Start celebrating student growth by showing off their work!

Calls home.  We have been doing a fairly great job in our outreach.  Remember that we have 8 minutes built into each day, including Fridays (the 40 minutes of family outreach time) to call any advisee who doesn't make it to 2nd period on time. You should also take the opportunity to update families on academic progress prior to the first progress report.  Remember, reaching out to share positive news is just as important (and even more powerful) than only updating on failure or behavior mistakes.  Also, it's more fun to talk about the good stuff!

PD and Pods.  From now on, all teachers will meet in room 409 at 3PM for our weekly PD.  We may only have time to provide feedback for one person this week, but if your pod decides, you can provide feedback to both.  To facilitate that, please make sure that your group has entered notes and feedback into your POD's debriefing Protocol.  Here's Monday's Agenda

    • MS Teachers 2:50-3:00 meet in 409 for MS Announcements
    • All Teachers 3:00-3:40 meet in 409 for Pod Debriefs
    • MS Teachers 3:40-4:10 meet in Grade Teams in 409
    • HS Teachers 3:40-4:20 meet in Grade Teams (9th is in 403; 10th/12th is in 511?; 11th/12 is in B53)

Co-Teaching and Co-Planning.  This week I will be paying visits to classrooms with two teachers.  We have a lot of co-teaching happening this year, and visiting classrooms is the best way to see how it's working.  I've heard a number of people express concern that there is not enough time to co-plan.  That's true.  So, let me clarify my expectations around classroom with two teachers.

    • Both the primary classroom teacher and the ISS or push-in teacher are facilitating their own formats, in particular Unison/Table shares and conferences.  When I pop in for observations I'll be looking for evidence of this (either formats in action or via looking at records/sign-ups).
Teachers should use grade or subject team time to coordinate calendars.  Once calendars are coordinated, formats should happen, and the need for co-planning will change.  Once formats are consistently happening, teachers will need to meet to share data (e.g. review UR and Conference records to inform Grass Roots lessons and/or identify targeted skills/concepts that require additional or different activities during Work Time).  From initial observations, most teacher pairs are still working on format consistency.  If this applies you, focus first on establishing your two calendars and keeping the lessons short enough to make sure Unison/Table shares and Conferences can happen.   If you and your co-teachers have succeeded in getting formats consistently running, the come to me and I will set aside per session time to support your next step in co-planning.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser.  All cookie dough packets are due to Carol by Friday.  These are the last five days to try to reach our goal (that all students sell at least 5 items).  This week, please remind students in your classes to strive to reach this goal!  As a reminder, the PTA is offering a pizza party for any student who meets this goal and the PTA is offering a prize to the highest seller.  As extra incentive for staff, I'm offering two prizes:  (1) Any and all advisors who have at least 90% of their advisory selling at least 5 items will be treated to lunch, and (2) The Advisory with the highest sales in the school will get funded to go on a field trip of their choice!  So, let's get to it and raise some funds for our PTA to support upgrades in our technology!

    Resilient Scholars Project

Over 75% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.  That means that 3 out of 4 of our students are living in poverty.  It's important that we understand the strains on our students both in and out of school (empathy - not sympathy).  To overcome the adversity our students face, they will need to develop strong social emotional skills.  One of the key skills that fuel the growth mindset is Optimistic Thinking.  In order to grow and achieve, students have to believe that they can!  Check out these sentence starters and this rubric to help students orient their thinking and track their progress.  Try to find ways to integrate into your classroom this week!

    Week of Oct 13, 2015

    Announcements

Unit Launches and Academic Intervention/Failure Prevention.  Now that unit zero is completed, everyone is in full swing of the first unit.  This first marking period ends two weeks from Friday, so we're at the halfway point of their first round of grades.  Early intervention is key to preventing failure.  Here are some strategies to support student academic success.

    • Extra Unison Reading - All students should be participating in Unison Reading roughly once a week in your class.  September was a wash, but not that we are in October, you should be scheduling regular UR groups.  For those students struggling the most, you (and if applicable) the other teachers in the room should be targeting students for extra UR groups.
    • Extra Conferences - All students should be scheduled for a conference at least once per marking period.  Just like UR, teachers should schedule struggling students with double conferences.
    • Assignment Recovery - Inevitably, students fail to complete and/or submit work.  After a period of time, as the class moves forward in units and topics, turning in late work just doesn't make sense or address the learning needs of students.  Now is the time to start planning for a new system to intervene on student failure.  In place of turning in late work, teachers should plan to develop in subject teams an assignment recovery system.  I'll be working with Subject Team Leaders after school on Tuesday to help flesh out the system.  Expect to work in Subject Teams this and next on developing this idea.

Observations Start on Tuesday.  If you've already had your initial planning conference, I'll be starting my observations next week.  At this point, all formats should be up and running in academic classes.  If you're not running Unison or Conferences on a particular day next week, please email me and tell me why.  If I'm in a room with co-teachers, my expectation is that both teachers are working in a format (UR or conferences in particular).  I will also be finishing my IPCs with all remaining teachers this week.  First round observations will focus on Unison Reading, Conferences, Classroom Environment, and Positive Climate (CLASS rubric - replaces LC Social Norms rubric).

Co-Teaching and Push In.  As I prepare for  my first round of observations, I want to be clear in my expectations of co-teachers.  Co-teachers need to be CO!   Both teachers need to have opportunities in the classroom to be evaluated.  The simplest way to achieve this is to make sure lessons stay mini and that both teachers are working with students during work time (in conferences, unison, or learning groups).  Additionally, I'm looking for both teachers to universally hold all students accountable to format social norms, and for both teachers to fairly and equitably use of the system of reminders.  So, please be mindful of your time in each other's classrooms. Make sure that the times allotted to formats are clear and allow for both teachers to do their work!

Cookie Dough Fundraiser.  All advisors have received cookie dough packages.  Our goal is to have every student in the building sell at least 5 items.  This week, please remind students in your classes to strive to reach this goal!  The PTA is offering a pizza party for any student who meets this goal and the PTA is offering a prize to the highest seller.

Launching into our first official unit is putting academic demands on our students.  When you see elevated emotional outbursts or other disruptions in the classroom, you might be encountering a failure in curriculum design.  That is, when students are asked to meet rigorous demands of course standards without adequate supports or scaffolds, kids have a tendency to react emotionally (aka freak out).  Planning is an imperfect process.  There's only so many things we can predict in student need, particularly if we're trying to address individual learning needs.  So, in addition to curricular design, we also need to help students manage their reactions to feelings of frustration or confusion.

To help students manage, School Connect (the SEL curriculum that we're using with the Resilient Scholars Project) has a module called "Developing Self-Awareness & Self-Management".  Take the time to look through the lessons in this module and select the ones the make the most sense for you and your grade team to use alongside your content lessons for the next few weeks.  I'm working on getting everyone their own logins to school-connect.  For right now, please use Jen's login to School Connect (login: jenc@uainstitute.org and password is emmaemma1)

    Announcements

Cookie Dough Fundraiser.  All advisors have received cookie dough fundraising packets by now.  If not, please see Carol ASAP to get your packet.  Please make sure your advisees receive the fundraising.  Top seller receives $100.  Students who sell at other levels will be eligible to receive movie tickets and/or a pizza party.   As added incentive for staff...the advisory who has (1) the most engagement (i.e. the highest percent of advisory involvement in selling), and/or (2) the highest amount of sales will receive an incentive prize from me.  I'm still trying to figure out what that prize should be - so shoot me an email to give me suggestions?  And yes, adults can sell too!

Parent Outreach Reminder.  As a reminder, we need to make sure to be using our parent outreach minutes each day.  You have 8 minutes per day to call your advisees.  A required component is that all teachers must call any advisory who does not make it to 2nd period (their first class after advisory) on time.  In order to make this easy for everyone, everyone needs to make it a priority in their classes to take and record attendance in Skedula during class.  Taking accurate attendance and parent outreach are both professional responsibilities for UAI teachers.  I will be following up on how well we are doing both of these duties this week.  Make me proud!

Student Locations.  While our middle and high school staff may be coming together under a single principal, our students should still be observing the expectations of staying in their assigned parts of the building.  If you see middle school students on the high school floors (outside of the gym floor and in detention in the basement), please remind them to return to their floors.  Vice versa, middle school teachers need to make sure high schoolers remain on assigned high school floors.  We have not yet established new protocols for students.  Until we do, we keep to existing rules.

After Hours.  Unless we have special evening events, we do not officially have a permit to be in the building after 6pm.  School safety has been gracious enough to make exceptions from time to time.  However, they are held ultimately responsible if anyone is in the building after they leave.  They are hard working and are simply trying to wrap up a long day of work for themselves when they come around and ask you to leave.  They have asked that I reach out to you.  I am asking that you respect their position and their requests.  When it's time to leave, please comply with their requests that you clear the building.  Thank you!

Pod Launch.  As you have heard from Rebecca and Meredith, we are meeting together on Monday for PD.   We will be launching our first round of teacher-run mini-inquiry groups (we call Pods).  We will be meeting in room 409.  The middle school teachers should report there at 2:50PM, after finishing parent outreach.  The high school teachers should report there at 3PM, after finishing their parent outreach.  The MS will have brief announcements first.

    Resilient Scholars Project

As we enter our 2nd full week of school, we can finally begin establishing routines and expectations. It's important to remember that in addition to our academic and classroom routines, we need to pave the ground for positive social patterns.  Here are some strategies/lessons you may want to use in your class to deal with common social dilemmas in the classroom.

Paying Attention  In this mini-lesson, you can explicitly provide students with a clear strategy on how to actively pay attention to others (e.g. during lessons, unison, small group instruction, etc.) and how to show others that you are paying attention.  It's important to be transparent that there could be two reasons students get reminders in class (1) they are actually doing something that requires redirection or (2) they look like they're doing something that requires redirection.  Giving students the benefit of the doubt and assuming #2 is a great strategy to de-escalate situations.  Pairing de-escalation with this lesson will be a first brick in building a strong pro-social foundation for your class.

Dealing with Anger & Frustration  This lesson leads with the quote "When anger goes up, thinking goes down."  As humans, we all feel how challenging it is to keep rationale in the heat of the moment.  This lesson provides structures to generate strategies to support students in their effort to cool down and get a handle on their feelings during frustrating moments.  These strategies can become part of your classroom environment and should be used to help students deal with frustration and anger as it bubbles up during class.  If they are better equipped to manage their feelings, they are better equipped to learn!
