This Summer's Memories

Welcome Back!  Walking on the beaches of Jekyll Island, GA (yes, actually named after Jekyll as in Jekyll and Hyde), we came upon this wonderfully interesting geometric sand shapes.  It made me take pause and awe the natural mathematical beauty that surrounds us in the world (it took me a while to find out what they are...I won't rob you of that treat and let you find out on your own!).  I truly hope you all also took some time to recharge and get excited for the upcoming year.  It is shaping up to be one of the best yet!

Summer school is officially closed, and UAI will be coming back online for the 2017-2018 school starting on Monday.  In next week's blog, you'll get the full debriefing of the school and the goals for the year.  This is a small prep blog post to ease you into the start of a wonderful year!

This summer was packed full of social and political upheaval as we continue to each navigate our existence under a very different type of presidential leadership.  If anything, I feel the world's events galvanizing our mission and vision for our students.  Our mission of empowering our young women in STEM fields, which are still dominated by men, is more important in today's climate than it ever has been.  The work we do at UAI is important, far reaching, and way more impactful than any job.  We are helping young women become a better future for our world.  That isn't a job, it's a passion and a mission. I'm excited to have such a talented and committed group surrounding our girls as we move forward in this work!

Things To Do

Staff Return.  All staff are invited to return next Wednesday and Thursday 30AUG17 and 31AUG17.  Staff will receive training rate per session for work these two days.  Here's the agenda

  • Wednesday, 30AUG17:
    • 9:00-9:30AM - Welcome and Overview of the day - Meet in the 205 (the library)
    • 9:30-2:00PM - Work Time (Classroom Set up and/or Course Planning)
  • Thursday, 31AUG17:
    • 9:00-2:00PM - Continued Work Time

The goal of these two days are:

  • Goal #1:  Complete Room Set Up.  There will only be about 30 min for final room set-up time on the 5th and 6th of September.  So, to give you more time to get oriented and situated, I'm inviting you in early.  Here are some things I need you keep in mind during set up:
    • Moving Furniture.  Don't move anything heavy by yourself.  Our custodians will be around that week to help.  Please don't drag things across floors.  The floors are beautiful now, and we don't want them scratched up prior to the start of school.  Help is available!
    • Trash and Hallway.  Don't leave anything in the hallways.  If you are tossing things, please put them in trash cans, OR stack near trash cans, clearly labeled "Trash" so our custodians can pick them up.
    • Wall Prep - Use blue wall adhesives to hang things on your walls.  Staples and tacks the paint, causing an enormous amount of work for our facilities staff.
  • Goal #2:  Complete Planning Prep.  We began unit planning back at our PD in June.  I also sent a reminder email on August 5th to get you thinking.  Now is the time to bring planning to a finished product.  This Unit Template, Curriculum Map, and Yearlong Pacing Guide must be ready to go at the start of our full staff PD on Tuesday, 05SEP17.   We will be using them to generate our lesson plans for the first unit on the 5th and 6th.  The focus of high quality instruction is excellent lesson planning.  Thus, the 5th and 6th (when we are all back and officially kick off the year) will develop lesson plan quality.  To prepare for this work, you'll need to complete first the following:
    • Complete this Unit Template (save a copy of your own and upload your final version to the correct folder).  The unit template has clickable links that will guide you through each step of the planning process.  These resources are adapted from our partners at the Literacy Design Collaborative.   You can log in to Core Tools (or create a new login) to search their database for inspirations as well.  When you name the unit, please save it in the appropriate folder HERE and use this naming convention:  COURSE NAME & GRADE_UNIT TITLE_TEACHER NAME_2017-18
    • Complete this Curriculum Map Template to the best of your ability.  This document will provide you and students an overview of the course.  Differing from the pacing guide, the Curriculum Map gives an ideological overview of what students will be learning with you and why it's relevant to them.
    • Complete this Pacing Guide with links to your daily lesson plans.  The Pacing Guide has all the school year, and UAI specific holidays and events.  This is your main logistical tool
    • Your lessons are expected to be linked into the Pacing Guide.  Here's the UAI Lesson Template, but you are free to use your own.  You may wish to create blank templates for all your lessons now so you can finish the pacing guide, at least for your first unit.  As a heads up, this is where Annie & I will go to evaluate your lesson and unit plans after an observation.

Current Staff Facebook.  It's time to update our Staff Facebook.  This is a tool that allows us to build community among our staff, students and families.  I have received from most, but I'm still missing a few.  Please send me a recent picture and a brief bio:  Where are you from?  What are your hobbies?  What was your major/minor in college and where did you go to school?  How long have you lived in New York City?  How long have you worked at UAI? What grade and subject will you be teaching?  What makes you most excited to start the school year?  Please email your bio to kiris@uainstitute.org by August 28th.

      This Week's Memories

8th Grade Stepping Up.  A very big shout out goes to Ms. Tracy for organizing a wonderful year of experiences for our 8th graders that culminated in Friday's stepping up ceremony.  Natalie & Cherry were flawless mistresses of ceremony, and Cherry fulfilled a particularly clutch role by stepping in as our keynote speaker in the 11th hour.  It UAI teamwork at its very best and resulted in a memorable experience for all!

This is the last blog of the 2016-17 School Year!  Summertime blog posts come out every other week until we are back in August.  Remember to save the date for staff PD return (just like we did this year).  August 29, 30, and 31st.  Agendas will come out soon so stay tuned!

      To Do's for this Week

[Tuesday, 27JUN17] High School Graduation.  Our 5th graduation exercises will begin at 11am at LIU's Kumbel Theater.  Doris has given specific high school teachers assignments for the day.  Please check with her on your duty specifics.  All staff should report to Kumbel no later than 10:45 (except for Brandon who will be chaperoning the MS lunch until 11:15.  Brandon will join us after!

[Tues & Weds 27 and 28JUN17] Last Two Days.  Tuesday and Wednesday are official school days.  Students should report to their advisor.  Advisors must take attendance in Skedula and communicate official attendance to the teacher who has the official ATS attendance sheet for that day (this is easiest done via an email to the grade team).

        • On Tuesday, Advisors must make sure each advisee's locker is completely cleaned out.  We'll have extra trash cans on the floors in the AM to help. Lockers left locked after the last day of school will be clipped, and all contents will be trashed.  All staff can dismiss HS students when lockers are clean.  Students cannot wander the halls, they must exit the building or remain with their advisor.  All 8th Grade and HS students are dismissed at 10AM.  All 6th graders will be dismissed after lunch (11:15), and 7th grade wil be dismissed at 10:30 (or if they choose, they can stay for lunch, too).
        • On Wednesday, Advisors should distribute report cards.  Students are immediately dismissed once report cards are distributed.  Report card not collected, need to be returned to Ms. Carol in alphabetical order. Again, please do not allow students to roam the halls.  Make sure to clearly instruct them to exit the building.  Pick up lasts from 8:30-10AM. At 10AM, bring all report cards to main office.  At 10:30 AM, all staff reports to room 409 for the end-of-year meeting (and staff photo).

[Wednesday, 28JUN17] Wear Your Staff Shirt!  Wear your staff shirt on Wednesday, the last day of school so that we can gather briefly in room 409 to take our end-of-the-year staff photo!  If you didn't get yours, yet, stop by 401!  Due to the late release of last week's blog, this didn't quite work.

[Wednesday, 28JUN17] Curriculum Map and Unit.  For those staff who participated in the Colleen's Curriculum Planning Workshop at the Staff Retreat, remember you have some hard due dates coming up!   All teachers should have already uploaded their initial drafts into THIS FOLDER (with this nomenclature:  GRADE LEVEL_COURSE_UNIT#_UNITNAME).  This week, we will be meeting with you to review your planning materials.  Before you can check out on the last day of school28June17, you must submit:
      • your final draft of the unit plan (GRADE LEVEL_COURSE_UNIT#_UNITNAME)
      • completed curriculum map (it may be in draft but must be fleshed out for the entire year). GRADE LEVEL_COURSE_CURRICULUM MAP
NOTE:  Please use the nomenclature above.  There are 35 different folks accessing this curriculum folder.  The nomenclature will help keep everything organized!

[Tuesday, 27JUN17] Ready Rooms for Summer.  Please prepare all classrooms for summer use.  As a reminder:
      • All personally owned refrigerators or microwaves must be cleaned, emptied, and stowed away in locked closets.  Any refrigerator or microwave not stored, will be removed over the summer. This is a regulation from the city, which is now being enforced by our building manager, Carlos.
      • All tech equipment should have already been returned to George.  No carts, projectors, or document cameras should be stored in your room.
      • All books and materials should be stored in locked closets OR stored on shelves (use the shelves attached to the walls first (if you have those in your room), and if necessary, use the other shelves.  The custodial staff plans to do a deep clean this summer so please remove anything from movable shelves and pick up everything from the floor.  That way our custodians will be able to move furniture for a better clean.
      • All materials posted on the walls and/or bulletin boards (including hallway bulletin boards) must be removed.

Staff-Student Volleyball!  The students gave our staff some stiff competition taking the first game by storm.  However, our stalwart staff, with Mr. James earning a well-deserved MVP, came back in the 2nd game. Ultimately, the students rallied and overpowered the grown-ups, a dream fulfilled if only on the volleyball court! ;-)  It was great fun and if you missed this one, please do try to make the next one!

Successful Staff Retreat!  Many thanks to everyone who was able to make it to our first annual full staff retreat.  Both Wednesday and Thursday were extremely productive days.  As a reminder, please follow up with Annie, Colleen, and Val as per their directions during the workshops.  For those teachers who didn't make it to the retreat, please stop by 401 for your t-shirt!

      This Week's Memories

This was a major week!  So many fantastic things happened!  Be prepared for a lengthy blog of celebration!

Senior Awards Night!  Our 5th annual Senior Awards Night was a wonderful affair.  Ms. Doris, with Starlet's assistance, created a memorable affair for our graduating class and their families.  In particular, Ms. Doris put her usual indelible touch on the event with many heartfelt and personal anecdotes for each of our young women.  Thank you Doris for your hard work and bringing such a wonderful event to life.  Many thanks to all the staff who were able to participate, too!

Springfest 2017.  This was our 11th annual Springfest, and with this graduating class being the last of our students who will have been born in the 90s, Girls Inc chose a 90s theme to celebrate.   Our entreprenuers, actors, dancers, and designers celebrated their achievements along with our honor roll students.  Many thanks to all staff who were able to join in the celebration!

Middle School Cultural Day.  Ms. Natalie and the 8th graders had a beautiful celebration of culture and food! The 8th graders presented and shared great food, and their teachers (Cherry, Christina, Kristina, and Meaghan) all turned out to help Natalie and the girls have a wonderful time with their families.  Great work everyone!

8th Grade BBQ.  Ms. Tracy coordinated the first annual 8th grade BBQ to celebrate the stepping up Class of 2017.  The girls had a wonderful time, and it was a very special event coordinated by their wonderful teachers.  Thank you Ms. Tracy and the 8th-grade team for creating such a special memory for our girls!

Final Assembly of the Year.  The Class of 2017 proudly displayed their future colleges and performed original (self-choreographed) dance pieces for our final assembly of the year.   In addition, our middle school dance troupe wowed the crowd with an amazing piece that set the crowd cheering. It was a beautiful expression of the sisterhood and support that makes UAI special.  Many thanks to Ms. Jen for working hard to coordinate this spectacular end to a series of inspiring assemblies!

Same as Me.  Mr. Erick and our after school theater club staged their first play.  It was an original script performed in their very own pop up theater (aka 409).  Mr. Erick and his club did an amazing job transforming their classroom into a performance space, and our young thespians acted their hearts out last Thursday!  Many congrats to Erick and our girls!

      To Do's for this Week

[Monday, 05JUN17] Science Written Exam.  Our 8th graders will be taking the written portion of the Science Exam on Monday.  Joanna has already shared the schedule.  Please take a moment to review it again by clicking HERE.  Also, to help our 8th graders have the best testing environment, I'm asking that all other middle school teachers make sure to be present in the halls to ensure quiet and orderly transitions tomorrow morning.

[Wednesday, 07JUN17] Early Dismissal.  As a reminder, students will have a rapid dismissal on Wednesday, 07JUN17 at the end of 5th period (12:10).  Students participating in Girls Inc After School will begin right after dismissal.  Staff attending the retreat will be released to travel to Tarrytown.  Staff not attending the retreat will be provided with alternate assignments.  Please click here for directions to Tarrytown.
