Announcements

Final Post of the Year.  Today's post will be the final post of the 2014-2015 school year.  Summer staff, you will be receiving emails directly providing updates and guidance for summer school, and over the summer UAI HS community will get one or two updates on summer happenings, but regular blog posts will not return until late August 2015.  This has been a wonderful and remarkable year.  Thank you all for your commitment, professionalism, talent, and sense of community.  No single individual can make a community great.  Together, we worked well to truly elevate the quality of learning at UAI HS - for our students, ourselves, and our community at large.  Congrats team!

End of Year Checklist.  Tomorrow is the last exam testing day for us at UAIHS.  All rooms except UAI summer schools rooms (403, 405, 407, and 409) must be prepared for summer school use.  Here's your checklist
  • Finish up the DESSA for your advisees and your half the of the instructional group.
  • All electronics have been returned to Allan
  • Any other valuable resources (e.g. books, math manipulatives, etc.) have been securely stored in locked closets or on bookshelves that have been turned to face the walls.
  • All teacher desks have been emptied of personal items that you don't want to lose
  • All walls have been cleared of materials and you have removed any staples from the walls in preparation for summer painting.
  • Anything else that I haven't mentioned...if you don't want it lost, stolen, or damaged over the summer, then put it somewhere where access is limited.

Last Day Logistics.   Report Card Pick Up.  All students will report to their advisory rooms between 8:20 and 10AM on Friday.  Students are only to report to pick up their report cards.  Students are dismissed immediately after picking up their report cards.  At 9:45AM, please call the homes of your advisees to let them know that they will be able to pick up their report cards in the main office starting on Monday, July 29th.  If you have the parent's email addresses, you can also email the report cards directly.   Advisory Contact Information.  Please make sure to triple check Skedula for any contact information updates.  Summer School Students will also be collecting their summer school letters on Friday.  Their programs will not be ready until the 1st day of summer school.  So, if your advisee doesn't show up on Friday, please call home to let her know that she has to report for summer school on Thursday, July 1st at 8:30AM.  Deposits, Keys, etc.  Please bring your keys (regular and elevator) along with your remaining report cards and summer school letters to room 409 at 10:30.  All deposits will be returned.  If you are checking out any piece of technology over the summer, your deposit will remain with me.

Plato Training.  Ms. Doris will be holding a Plato training and summer school teachers will be registering their students (credit only students are mandated registration - regents prep students are optional for study resources).  All summer school staff must attend to train for Plato and Study Island, which will be our two primary resources for the summer (in addition to the stuff we already have in our classrooms).  For those teachers who are teaching summer school, Allan will check out your cart.  If you are teaching summer school and getting a tech cart, I'm going to hold onto your deposits (ditto on the keys/elevator passes) and you will hold onto the carts and keys/cards.

Save The Date For Next Year's PD Training.  Teachers are scheduled to report back on Tuesday, September 8th, but please do save the date for PD training on September 1 through 3 of the week prior to that.  Agendas and goals are still TBD, so please stay tuned to find out!

Ms. Pamela's Retirement Party.  Ms. Pamela's retirement party is on Monday at 3:30PM at Dallas BBQs.  To get there, you head straight down Adams (away from the Brooklyn Bridge), and turn left on Livingston.  After 8 years with UAI and many more years with the DOE, Ms. Pamela has decided to hang up her teaching hat and retire to the golden shores (or is it glades) of Florida!  Come celebrate her illustrious career as teacher, leader, and mentor!

Graduation at Kumbel Theater. Once again, our High School Graduation will be held at Kumbel theater, located at Long Island University.  If you have not already received a specific assignment from Ms. Doris, please report to the theater no later than 10:15AM so that you can assist with entry and seating.  As is our tradition, we will be having an informal post-graduation celebratory drink at Habana Outpost after graduation is over.

Important Dates

  • Monday, 22JUN15 - Pamela's Retirement Party
  • Wednesday, 24JUN15 - Plato Training
  • Thursday, 25JUN15 - High School Graduation at Kumbel Theater.  All staff must report to graduation at Kumbel Theater no later than 10:30AM (or earlier if Ms. Doris asked you to help out).
  • Friday, 26JUN15 - Last Day of School - Students must report by 10AM.  Staff dismissed at 11AM.  Final Staff meeting will be in 409 at 10:30.  Please bring all keys and remaining report cards/summer school letters to the meeting.
  • Wednesday, 01JUL15 - First Day of Summer School. Students report to summer school at 8:30AM.

Announcements

Penultimate Post of the Year.  Today's post will be the 2nd to last of the year.  There will be a few updates from the summer, but regular posts will not resume again until the last week of August.  So, these last two posts will be longer than usual as we wrap up the 2014-2015 school year.

Final Grades.  Final grades are due at 3pm on Wednesday, June 17th.  Please make sure that you are not late with your grades because there is a rapid turn around time for summer programming.   Please remember that these grades are the official grades that will remain on students transcript records.  These grades will be used to calculate official grade point averages and thus be a primary influence in our students' college futures.  With such importance attached to these final grades, please be sure to be extra meticulous as you finish the grading cycle for the year and enter in your final grades.

In addition, I have been fielding some concerns about what to do with students whose grade is below 65.  From a purely mathematical perspective, evaluate how close the grade is to failing (55) versus passing (65).  If their final grade is closer to 65, round to 65.  If their final grade is closer to 55, round to 55.  There are always going to be instances in which math, while necessary, is not sufficient.  It is always expected that you use your professional judgment to give final grades.  FYI, students who were passing in January hold onto those credits.  Those who were not passing in January will fail the whole year (2 credits per course) if they fail in June.

Final Benchmarks.  Your final benchmarks should be uploaded into this document here by the end of the day on Wednesday, 17JUN15.  We will be using this data to analyze student progress over the course of the year, and we will compare the data to student performance on June Regents to evaluate the efficacy of this year's benchmarking system.  For Regents terminating courses, please enter your predicted regents exam scores (like we did in April).

Field Day Logistics.  Students are to report to advisory.  We will be making announcements for students to leave in a staggered dismissal.  Dismissal announcements will begin at 9:15.  In the event of rain, we will relocate the event to the gym and you will be called up later (at 9:30).  I am confirming availability with the other principals in the building.  SLJ has already agreed to let us have the gym from 9:30-11:00.  Hopefully AIL and the Middle School can also relocate for the morning.  Please check your emails in the AM for last minute updates.

Extended Advisory Logistics.  During the extended advisory on Monday, please use the time to wrap up end of the year logistics with students.

  • Review grades in Skedula.  If they are failing, please make sure they understand that they will be receiving a summer school assignment.  If they are not passing at least 3 core classes (core are math, science, English, history, and language), then they will be repeating the grade.  Please make sure they understand that and that you have made contact to the home to explain this and noted this in Skedula.
  • Review Regents Week Schedule.  Please review each student's Regents Week Schedule. Make sure that they understand that they cannot arrive late, nor will they be admitted after 10AM in the morning or after 2PM in the afternoon.
  • Student Email check in.  Students will be receiving emails and updates over the summer.  Please make sure each advisee has an active UAI email account and knows how to log in and check her email.
  • Parent Contact Information.  We will also be reaching out to families over the summer to increase family engagement and provide families with opportunities for students and their families.  Please review the information in Skedula and in particular, please make sure we have a working phone number and a working email address.  If there is in accurate information in Skedula or if there is information that needs to be added, please email me the information and I will ask Nancy to update in ATS.
  • Girls Inc Summer Camp.  Please advertise our Girls Inc summer program offerings.  Even if students are mandated to summer school, they can participate in the Girls Inc Program.  Please review the Girls Inc Summer Camp Description and Application here.  Girls can fill out applications in Advisory, and you can collect them and give them to Nicole in room B35.
  • Locker Clean Out.  Please make sure that your advisees have cleaned out their hall and locker room lockers.  All lockers will be clipped and cleaned out starting at the end of the day on Monday.  So students should leave nothing in the lockers.
  • Call Absent Advisees.  If you have absent advisees, please call them and review the information on this list.  Please indicate in Skedula that you were able to review the above information with each student.
  • Pack up your Rooms.  All technology should have been returned to Allan last Wednesday. All materials and books should be secured in locked closets and/or on bookshelves that can be turned to face the wall. All classrooms will be used for summer school this year.  Your desks should also be cleared of personal items or locked for the summer.  Please remove everything from the walls and if you used staples on the walls, please remove them in preparation for summer painting.
  • Last Day of School. Students must report on June 26th, the last day of school.  They must report to their advisory no later than 10AM.  Students will only report to pick up their final report card and summer programs.  They will be immediately dismissed after they pick up the report cards and program. At 10AM, teachers will return all remaining report cards and summer programs to Nancy in the main office for mailing home. Teachers are then to report for a final staff meeting at 10:30 in room 409 and for a full dismissal for summer at 11AM.

Reminders

EOY Conferences.  End of Year Conferences start this week.  As per my last email, please remember to come prepared to your meeting with:

Data:
  • Your Scholarship Report (see my email from last )
  • Your Grade Scholarship Report
  • Your last benchmark data
  • And any other data you wish to include (e.g. qualitative examples of progress from your POD work - observations, feedback, etc.)
For this meeting, you will need to be prepared to discuss the following:

Agenda
  • (15min) Reflect on your Data.  Analyze your course passing rates (what percentage passed and what was the grade distribution), your benchmark data, and any other data point(s) of your choosing to discuss  why you think it fell out that way.  Also, revisit the goals I laid out for the school year.  Have you met the goals?  Are you satisfied with your progress? If so, why? If not, why not?  In either case, what are you planning for next year to keep or change student performance?
  • (15min) Reflect on your goals.  Which were successfully achieved? Which were put aside (and why)? Which ones are you still ongoing and what are you planning to do for next year?  It's expected that your goals may have shifted from the last time we spoke.  With the amount of peer feedback through coaches and PODs, that's inevitable.  So, please bring your current goals to the table.
  • (10min) Planning for Next Year.  In the final minutes of your conference with me, we will use the time to build out goals for next year.

Announcements

Last Week of Classes.  We are already here!  This year has flown by, and unbelievably we are looking at our last three days of classes, followed by our last benchmark of the year.  As a reminder, your final benchmark follows the pattern of all other benchmarks.  Please use the full 90 minutes and please use the same assessment structure we have been using all year (e.g. evens/odds on an old Regent exam for your subject).  In addition, As we wrap up the year please make sure you are attending to the following:

  • Failing/Borderline Failing Students.  Please make sure you are checking in with them daily to clarify what they need to do to ensure that they pass your course for the year.  Please also make sure that you give updates on your check-ins in Skedula and that you outreach to families so that they are aware of the risk of course failure.
  • Packing up for the year.  Please make sure that by Friday, advisees have cleaned out their lockers, returned all resources, and removed the locks from both hallway and gym lockers.  Make sure that by the end of the day on Wednesday, you have returned all technology to Allan. Once Allan gives your cart the thumbs up, I will return your check/cash deposits.
  • Preparing for Regent exams. By next Tuesday, all materials must be removed from the walls (please also remove ALL STAPLES from the walls). This will help in the painting process for the summer. By next Tuesday, please arrange all desks in rows for testing.
  • Preparing for Summer School.  By the end of the day next Friday, please secure all resources and materials.  Use the following rule of thumb...If it's not secured, it probably won't be there when we get back from summer.  All HS classroom are being used this summer.  There will be an elementary school in the basement classrooms, Girls Inc will be running programs in July on the 4th floor, and the UA School for Criminal Justice will be housed on the 5th floor.

DRP Results are in!  The latest DRP results are in!  Looking at the data, you can readily see that the 9th graders had the greatest growth, and that as a school, our fall growth outpaced our spring growth. We're going to be using this data in more detail when we return in the fall, but for now, you'll be using this data to form student groups for next year.  Monday's PD time will be dedicated to grade teams meeting.  There are two primary goals for grade teams: (1) Finalize the PID list, and (2) create Groups for next year using DRP and other data that the grade team wishes. These groups will be the first draft of the final fall groups.  Depending on enrollment, promotion, & other data, groups will shift.

This Year's Achievements

(1) The Learning Environment:  By continuing (a) our work on team function and collaboration, and (b) using research-based rubrics to provide peer and evaluative feedback, and (c) focusing feedback on key rubrics (Classroom Environment, Social Norms, Unison, and Conferences), we will continue to improve the school learning environment and increase parent, teacher, and student satisfaction on the Learning Environment Survey.

  • Created new POD Structures
  • Launched Peer Collaborative Coaching Model
  • Launched Daily Calls Home to Late and Absent Advisees

(2)  Student Progress Goal:  By increasing opportunities for assessment and analysis of student performance on assessment, teachers will empower students to make more informed choices during Work Time.  Unit Arcs will be streamlined to accommodate student needs.  Conferences will be higher Quality.  Thus, course passing rates and average regents completion rate will continue rise.
For all students, at least 80% of all students will continue pass each individual course.
For students with IEPs and/or in the lowest 3rd, at least 80% of students will pass each individual course.

(3)  Student Performance Goal:  With continued focus and development on core LC formats (Unison Reading, Conferences, and Work Time), we will continue to have strong College Readiness Metrics and Graduation Rates.

Increase graduation rate from 90.9% to at least 93%. (We have a shot at 94%!)
Increase percent attending 4-year public or private universities from 44% to 60%. (Data TBD - AWAITING CLASS OF 2013/4 DATA)
Aim for at least a 98% 6-year graduation rate*(our first metric of this sort). DATA TBD

Increase enrollment in 4-year (public or private) universities from 44% to at least 50%, and maintain overall college matriculation at 98% - INITIAL ENROLLMENT INTO 4YEAR IS 42%.

(4)  NEW GOAL - Attendance & School Culture:  With a combination of advisor contact home, attendance committee initiatives, and school culture committee work, we will create an environment in which students want to come to school everyday, and on time.

Increase average daily attendance from 88.5% to 95%. - OUR ADA IS 92%
Hold monthly student assemblies to build school spirit and celebrate student achievement. CHECK

4.2 - Structures for Improvement -
          Teacher Teams & Leadership Dev.
          Well Developed

Excerpts from our PPO (Principal Performance Observation) - by Janice Ross, Principal Eval.

Areas of Celebration

1.4 - School Culture - Positive Learning Environment"The principal fosters a culture of mutual trust and positive attitudes that supports the academic and personal growth of students and adults.  The use of the Learning Cultures program strongly supports a positive and structured learning environment... Students work collaboratively in every class thereby fostering an environment where young women can support each other’s growth."

1.1 - Instructional Core - Curriculum "A review of curricular documents provided evidence of coherency of expectations

across classrooms about how students learn best...

The DRP data is used to inform curricular decisions....

In one classroom, students received their DRP scores and were asked to

assess where they are now with respect to the September results in light of their

acquisition of academic skills thus far.
"

3.4 School Culture - High Expectations

"School leaders consistently communicate high expectations ... to the entire staff, and provide training resulting in a culture of mutual accountability for those expectations....The use of learning cultures program has allowed the school to establish a culture for learning that systematically communicates high expectations for all students and provide feedback and guidance to ensure that students own that experience and are prepared for the next level."

4.1 Structures for Improvement - Teacher Support and Supervision

"Feedback to teachers accurately captures strengths, challenges, and next steps using the Learning Cultures model that is aligned to the Danielson Framework for Teaching; feedback articulates clear expectations for teacher practice, supports teacher development, and aligns with professional goals for teachers...Teachers actively visit each other’s classrooms through the lens of a Learning Cultures teacher rubric aligned to the Danielson Framework."

4.2 Structures for Improvement - Teacher Teams and Leadership Development
"Teachers consistently work together in professional development teams, otherwise known as “PODS”.  Teachers meet once a week after school in teams as well as twice a week during the day."

Area of Focus

1.2 Instructional Core - Pedagogy
Students take accountability for their work products and process, as facilitated by the teacher, who creates this culture in each classroom. Students are trained to be independent and resourceful. Students discussed topics in their groups to promote academic conversation. Teachers however, were not demonstrating delivery of rigorous instruction through an emphasis on writing and the writing process. The classrooms were print rich with expectations for the process of learning, however, minimal student writing, such as formative or summative assessments in the form of essays, research projects, or other larger performance tasks, were displayed to show that rigorous college ready tasks were given. There was a noticeable absence of actionable and specific written feedback to the students, to show alignment to specific CC standards and rubrics, as well as attention to the instructional shift of writing to sources and citation of evidence.

Preliminary Goals for 2015-2016

CLICK HERE to review the Chancellor's Vision for School Improvement

  • Student Progress and Performance Goals
    - Grading Policy Shift to 60% Performance and 40% Progress- Assessment will continue to include Benchmarks and DRPs. Two new types of
assessment will be introduced to further help students develop and achieve
measurable goals and more detailed action plans (CBMs and the DESSA). - Shifts in LC Expectations - Table Shares and Shares, Conferences, and R-Teams
  • Learning Environment, Attendance, and School Culture Goals - Maintain Advisory Outreach and Assemblies - Refine Teacher Team and Leadership Development Practices(Coaches, Pods&Teams) - Refining the Reminder System with new roles for Keepers and better communication between teachers and dean/admin support.
  • College and Career Readiness - Reset metrics for college achievement to focus on persistence - Develop the concept of "small" ball in college readiness. How do we integrate college awareness/readiness into the daily life of students through intentionally shifting the language and expectations we use in the classroom?
  • Parent Engagement (NEW GOAL) - Another "small ball" concept - how do we incrementally build parent engagement in their child's learning through focusing on small changes to facilitate entry, interaction, and communication. (Integrating families into social emotional learning, Consistency of language, continued calls home, timely Skedula updates, etc.)
