UAI Celebrations

Successful Women's History Month Celebration.  Once again, many, many thanks to our Carrera and Girls Inc partners for organizing and executing a fantastic day of workshops and activities celebrating women and inspiring our young girls.  Our mission at UAI is to provide students with both the academic and social emotional learning activities to equip them for college completion.  In so doing, we also aim to provide them exposure and access to role models and female empowerment concepts to help the prepare to work towards bringing increased equity for women, particularly women of color.  Thursday's activities was one step towards that goal!  Thanks to Wazina and Alyssa for organizing the activities that got our girls moving in the workshops.  Thanks to Kree for gathering an amazing group of women who presented to our girls.  Fianlly, thanks to the staff of Carrera and Girls Inc and our teachers for facilitating

workshops and activities.  Particularly, thanks to Tracy & Sursattie for stepping
in at the last few minutes to run our artistic workshops!  It was made a wonderful
day because of everyone stepping up to do their part!  Thank you!!!

Announcements and To Dos

REPOST Complete Student Led Conferences.  As of Friday, 18MAR16, we have completed 50% of our conferences.  We're still shy of our 80% target completion rate. So please make sure that you continue to reach out to families to complete your SLCs by next Friday, 01APR16As an incentive to guiding their advisories to parent and student survey completion, advisors who have a 100% completion rate (for both parent and students) will receive your own Kindle Fire! Carol and Nancy will be contacting you to see how they can best support your outreach.  Please make sure that you have updated the appointment sheet with all information so that they can correctly identify advisors who need outreach assistance. Here's the Appointment Sheet: SLC Appointment Sheet.

Benchmark Use.  Please use benchmark data to set measurable goals for students during conferences this month.  Here's where you can find the data Middle School Benchmarks and High School Benchmarks. Students need to focus on make small, incremental goals that lead to measurable outcomes (e.g. I want to get 15 more multiple choice questions correct on the next benchmark.  I did the best on X topic and kinda ok on Y topic, but Z topic I totally missed.  So, I will study hard on Y (to make it more solid) and review X.  For Z, I will ask my teacher for a learning group and try to get 3 more questions right in that topic by the next benchmark in May. I'll test myself in two week to see where I am in meeting this goal AND I'll check in with my teacher in two weeks to review progress and check in on this goal.)

Four Weeks Until Spring Break.  These next four weeks are going to be significantly important for our school and our girls.  For our middle schoolers, they begin taking their state exams next week and the week after.  For our high schoolers, this is penultimate batch of weeks to introduce new content.  When we return from spring break, we will have 5 weeks leading up to the exam-heavy schedule of June.  For this month, we will be looking to see how well you are able to plan and execute all of the formats.  To prepare, we will be sending you calendar invites for your final observation dates.  If the dates fall on exposure or non-LC dates, we will move the observation to a day that works better.  Let's make these last months the strongest and most consistent of the year!

Super short post today....

Happy First Day of Spring.  I guess it's fitting that we end one of the mildest winters of record with an impending snow storm. Well in any case, Spring is here which means summer is not very far behind.  With time ticking away, let me just jump straight in on some key points for this week.

Announcements and To Dos

Complete Student Led Conferences.  As of Friday, 18MAR16, we have completed 50% of our conferences.  We're still shy of our 80% target completion rate. So please make sure that you continue to reach out to families to complete your SLCs by next Friday, 01APR16. As an incentive to guiding their advisories to parent and student survey completion, advisors who have a 100% completion rate (for both parent and students) will receive your own Kindle Fire! Carol and Nancy will be contacting you to see how they can best support your outreach.  Please make sure that you have updated the appointment sheet with all information so that they can correctly identify advisors who need outreach assistance. Here's the Appointment Sheet: SLC Appointment Sheet.  Also, please make sure you return ALL surveys (completed or not completed) to Carol on Monday by 9AM.  We will try to get more completed during Tuesday's Family Engagement Night Dinner.

Benchmark Update.  Our third benchmark is complete!  Please update the benchmark documents with the March scores.  As you prepare for the upcoming state exams in April and June, please make sure that you set measurable and achievable goals.  Students are overwhelmed when they focus on getting everything right. If they simply focus on being better than they were yesterday, they will eventually get where they need to be.  Remember that the goal is growth, not perfection.  As you conference with students around their benchmark performance, please make sure to target content goals AND test-taking skills (stamina, strategies for focusing, pacing, etc.)  Please enter you benchmark grades in these documents by Thursday, 24MAR16 by 9AM:  Middle School Benchmarks and High School Benchmarks.

Spring Family Dinner, Science and Awards Night.  Please make calls to your advisees on Monday to personally invite them to our Spring Family Dinner, Science, and Awards Night.  We will be celebrating MP4 Honor Roll and Perfect Attendance students.  Sarah is coordinating Science Tables run by some of our High School ladies.  All staff are also invited to attend this fun, family night.  This is also the second stab at getting those surveys in. So, when you call home to invite families, please remind them to bring in those surveys that went home!

UAI Celebrations

Staff Perfect Attendance.  Congratulations to the staff who have made the perfect attendance list for the and/or second quarter of the year.  In particular, let's give a big hand to Elena, Meredith, and Tom who have maintained their perfect attendance for the whole year.  If you would like to see the complete data file on attendance, please see Kiri.  Also, please do let us know if you see any mistakes!  As we head into the final full quarter of the academic school year, let's all try to make it on the last list.  When we are absent, our girls really feel it.  They need us to help create the stable, nurturing environment that they will rely on to push towards achievement both in classes and on those state exams!  Let's all be in it to win it!

  • 2nd Quarter Perfect Attendance (December, January, and February)    Elena, Rebecca, Meredith, Jamie, and Tom
  • 1st Quarter Perfect Attendance (September, October, November) Val, Elena, Steve, Kim, Meredith, Natalie, and Tom

Announcements

Student Led Conferences and Benchmarks are next week.  Please remember to FILL IN YOUR APPOINTMENTS ON THIS SHEET.  All appointments need to be made by this Wednesday 16MAR16.  Also, remember take a moment to review expectations and tips for SLCs here.  High School Grade Team Leaders have already shared resources and best practices with Middle School Grade Team Leaders.  Please do reach out if you have any questions or concerns.  Click here to refresh your memory on the Benchmark Schedule

Visit Feedback.  Deputy Superintendent Richie Cintron visited several of our classrooms on Thursday.  We saw various formats and a range of student engagement and we had a good discussion on next steps.  Overall, it was a productive visit!  Stay tuned for more specific feedback and next steps as I process this information with the teachers we visited, cabinet, and our coaches.

Monday, March 14th is UAI's 9th Annual Pi Day.  The Math team has coordinated a series of fun events to celebrate Pi Day in their classes.  As a math and science themed school, Pi Day is one of many days that we use to leverage excitement around math and science (Sonia K day last week being another example... The NYU Poly classes and the Urban Advantage activities being others).  If you have UAI Pi Day Gear, please do wear it tomorrow.  If not, please remember to talk up the day with the girls to see what they look forward to or remember doing from their math classes on Pi Day (either present day or in years past).  Have a wonderful Pi Day everyone!!

Teacher To Dos

Bulletin Board Update.  I notice that we're beginning to move towards board update.  We didn't all get there by Thursday, but we definitely need to get there by this Thursday to prepare for our families visits.  Grade team leaders will assign boards to specific teachers.  Take time this week (e.g. using your PD period that we're not using because we don't have Pods this month) to update student work in bulletin boards.  In addition, take time to organize your classroom environments.  Again, we're not reinventing the wheel.  We are updating and tidying in preparation for girls' families.

Survey Response Rates.  The Learning Environment Survey is the primary tool by which our school is evaluated.  We're asking that you use SLCs to gather both student and parent surveys.  Please make sure that you make it a point to ask both parent and student to take a few minutes to complete the survey at the end of the SLC.  Please make sure you are scheduling your SLCs appropriately to allow time and space for this.  So that we can track who has submitted surveys, please indicate survey submission on the SLC appointment sheet.  We will be following up with parents and students who have not completed their surveys on March 22nd.  As an incentive to guiding their advisories to parent and student survey completion, advisors who have a 100% completion rate (for both parent and students) will receive your own Kindle Fire! Please click here for guidance on supporting families in survey completion.

UAI Celebrations

Congratulations AGAIN to our Lady Eagles!     Coach Elana and our varsity girls basketball players have made it to the Semi Finals.  Their next game is against the undefeated #1 seed East Harlem Pride (250 Bedford Park Blvd W, Bronx,10468) at 7PM.  We don't often get to celebrate school spirit.  So, when times like this come along, we should definitely take the opportunity to celebrate UAI and our Lady Eagles.  So, let's all show support by wearing our Adams Street Campus or UAI School gear to support our Lady Eagles and give them the boost they need to make it to the finals!!

Congratulations Class of 2016!  To celebrate their successful submission of their college applications, the seniors went on a bowling trip on Friday.   June is only two and a half months away, and it is so exciting to usher yet another wonderful class on their way to graduation, college, and beyond!

10th Annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day.  Ten years ago, I wrote a grant with my dear friend and one of the original members of the school's planning committee, Cathy O'Neil.  This grant was to the Association of Women in Math to host our first Sonia Kovalevsky Day with Barnard College.  SK days are particularly aimed at getting more women excited about math.  Sonia Kovalevsky was a mathematician.  The day has taken root, and has occurred every year for the last 10 years.  This past Friday, the math team worked with Barnard staff to execute a beautiful, engaging day for young women from all grades.  For the first time in a while, the middle school joined high school girls at Barnard.  It was great to have them all together again, and it was a fantastic day for all.

Announcements

PPO Visit Number Two.  Deputy Superintendent Richie Cintron will be back to visit UAI for the 2nd Principal Performance Observation.  One of the major things we'll be looking at is student engagement and formative assessment, both in the mini-lesson and throughout the period.   Here's the feedback from the last visit if you'd like to read the details.  On Thursday, 10MAR16, please be sure that

  • All of your classes are in formats.  We're definitely getting there!  LC structures are much more prevalent this month and I can see students settling into LC patterns and routines.
  • Formative Assessment and Student Engagement.  Many of you already do many of these things all the time.  I'm not asking that you reinvent the wheel this week. I'm asking that you plan to have these best practices in play on Thursday.  Be sure that all of your formats have planned engagement activities and formative assessments
    • Mini-Lesson Examples (Timed CBM at end of lesson - exit ticket; Turn and Talks; Answering Questions (e.g. holding up 1, 2, 3, or 4 fingers to select an option); Mini Whiteboard use (e.g. writing questions/summaries/answers and then holding up the whiteboard)
    • Work Time Examples (Self-Check Quizzes, Intention Sheets driven my diagnostic data/conference goals, etc.)
    • Unison Examples (using the record to record student interactions and following into student breaches, Timed CBM to answer a breach at the end of Unison)
    • Conference Examples (following into student responses to identify quality breaches, facilitating students to create SMART goals, revisiting past goals and progress data)
    • Share Examples (Timed CBM to answer Regents/NYS Middle School exam questions related to the share, self-check quizzes, summaries of presentation, etc.)

Student Led Conferences and Benchmarks are next week.  Next Thursday and Friday we will be on our Benchmark Schedule, and all of UAI will be conducting Student Led Conferences.  Please take a moment to review expectations and tips for SLCs here.  High School teachers and Middle School teachers who have been at UAI prior to last year (which is everyone except Erick K., Matthew, Natalie, and Sursattie) have experience with SLCs since we were all on an SLC structure prior to last year.  High School Grade Team Leaders have already shared resources and best practices with Middle School Grade Team Leaders.  Please do reach out if you have any questions or concerns.  Click here to refresh your memory on the Benchmark Schedule

Decision Making REPOST.  The lessons and article that I passed out during Monday's PD are designed to help you teach kids to make better decisions.  If you choose not to use the lessons, then DO plan another means by which you are
(1) Getting kids to PAUSE and REFLECT
(2) Develop a Thinking Routine that guides better choices.  As a reminder,  urgency is a useful tool (but don't lean on it too much or they will freak out).  Urgency must be coupled with achievable results.  For example, focus on what can be achieved by the end of the period, or the end of tomorrow, or the end of the week.  Structure their urgency using your intention sheets and concrete, measurable goals.
  • Urgency Tools:  In 10 classes, Marking Period 4 ends next Friday (11MAR16) and Student Led Conferences follow the next week (17MAR16 and 18MAR16).  Students will need to be able to show and talk about the work they do in your classes.  In 15 classes, students will take Benchmark IV (the last benchmark and predictive testing for the Middle School).  Students need to focus their efforts in class to push their growth and performance on this next litmus test.

Teacher To Dos

Bulletin Board Update.  Please take time this week (e.g. using your PD period that we're not using because we don't have Pods this month) to update student work in bulletin boards.  In addition, take time to organize your classroom environments.  Again, we're not reinventing the wheel.  We are updating and tidying in preparation for visitors.
