March 28th, 2022

Longer Than Usual.    This week's post will be a combo of last week and this week's information.  I had some family and personal events happening last weekend and this past weekend.  Last weekend, I flew to Atlanta for a dear friend's wedding and this weekend, I trekked up to Boston to celebrate my bestie from college's new book release, The Shame Machine.

So...Sunday blog writing was a little disrupted as of late.  Many apologies!

So, let's dive right in....

Announcements

Middle School Testing.   TODAY - Middle School Teachers should meet in room 403 to review Middle School Testing Procedures with Kiri.  It will be a super brief meeting to review final rosters and programming for the week.

Small Group Instruction To Resume.  Earlier this year, I removed small group instruction during your professional periods to provide teachers with more time for planning and adjustment to returning to in-school instruction after COVID.  As we enter into the final marking period of the year, that time needs to return to original intent so that we can support and intervene on student failure.

Any student who does not pass a MP3 course will be pulled from Learning Labs on specific days and assigned to their teacher(s) for small group instruction.  During small group work, teachers are expected to work with students to provide intervention and support instruction to close learning gaps in order to propel student learning and achievement for MP4.

Small groups will launch when we return from Spring Break on Monday, 25APR22.  Students will remain in these assigned small groups for the remainder of MP4.

Since students will be programmed into Small Groups, daily attendance in Skedula will be required.  Additionally, a weekly log of outreach & support will be required to be entered into Skedula.

June Remediation.  In addition to Small Group Intervention, students who are still failing as of May 27th will be mandated to attend school to work with their classroom teacher(s) during any and clerical, professional development, and assessment days in June.  These days and the small group instruction periods are aimed at providing students opportunities for success during the school year.

Start Summer Vacation Early.  If you have not already used up your allotted vacation days, I am giving the blanket approval to any and all staff who wish to use any or all of their vacation days for the last 7 days of June.  This means that if you haven't used any of your days yet, your last day of school this year could be June 17th (instead of June 28th).    Please email Kiri by the end of next week (April 8th) if you are interested!

Week of March 14th

UAI Staff News

Volume IX
Issue 26
March 14th 2022

It really does take a village.    This week we have our next round of parent conferences for the year.  Advisors are charged with being the primary liaison between school and family, and as such, they are charged with challenging task of engaging our families in the partnership needed to help our students succeed.

During regular outreach and particularly during this week's conferences, advisors will be discussing student academic & social emotional practice as well as any promotional, attendance and disciplinary issues.

No one individual advisor has first hand experience to all of this information.  That's impossible.  Therefore, advisors rely on the network of our UAI village to share information.  Additionally, the most effective for families to hear about their child's progress is from a single voice with the full, coherent story.  Hearing from the many different voices about their child's progress or challenges can often lead to a disconnected, discrete picture of success and failures- making it challenging for students to leverage their strengths to close gaps.   So we need our village to effectively work together.

This year, we are prioritizing giving back as much time to teachers as possible.  In addition, we created options to maximize student choice, which made our grade teams' capacity to meet about shared students impossible.  Because of this, we are more heavily reliant on our technical forms of communication than ever before.  The scheduling committee will be revisiting these choices soon, but for now, we need to find a way to optimize what we do have now and make it work.

So.. what do we have:
  • Skedula. Despite its major hiccup a few weeks ago, Skedula remains our primary form of communication.

    • Anecdotal entries are the primary tools that classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, deans, parent coordinator, school leadership, attendance team, and advisors can use to communicate narrative reports on individual student achievements and challenges.

    • Attendance entry needs to be accurate and consistent in order for our parent coordinator, school leadership, and the attendance team to be able to effectively communicate and impact student attendance.

    • Grades that are entered regularly allow everyone who works with students (advisors, para professionals teachers, counselors, parent coordinator, deans, school leadership) better support and celebrate students.

  • Email.  Our email communications are critical this year.  Our deans and counselors release reports on what is happening with students.  Everyone should be reading through each of these to scan for names of students with whom they work directly.  This helps us all have a well-rounded picture.

We need to tighten up our village.  Our email reports and communications remain strong.  However, we are struggling with Skedula.  At the start of the year, we were really good at updating Skedula with attendance, grades, and anecdotals.  Between Omicron and Skedula being down, we've lost that pattern and rhythm.  It's time to get back to our pattern and strengthen our community's capacity to support our whole children - not just the piece of them that we see in our respective work with them each day.

TO DO
  • Take daily attendance in each and every class you teach.  All attendance should be entered within the first 10 minutes of class. Please make sure that you take classroom attendance during your warm up or Do Now.  This will help advisors accurately review classroom attendance with families.  Without it, we have no leverage to impact change in student classroom attendance.  Our attendance team can only manage school attendance.  Classroom attendance (being late, skipping, etc.) relies on accurate period attendance.  Each teacher has a roll to play in closing the gaps on period attendance.  Please step up this week and do you part!

  • Update Grades.  We are not giving out report cards for this parent conference because the Marking Period ends on April 1st.  So, we are reliant on Skedula to communicate student progress. Make sure your grades are all entered into Skedula by the end of the day on Tuesday, 15MAR22.

  • Anecdotals.  SETTS/SERS Teachers, Counselors and Deans should prioritize updating Skedula with any critical information that advisors need for parent conferences.  Academic Teachers need to enter in anecdotals for all students who are failing as to why they are failing and what needs to be done to turn that failure around before the end of MP3.  Finally, everyone should enter anecdotals for at least 5 of their students to celebrate the greatest growth and achievement they've done for this marking period so far.
Each of our efforts move our students closer to realizing their best selves.  Our ability to work together cohesively through the tools that we have has a direct impact on how well our students thrive. When we step up together as a staff and with our families, our students will step up with us and excel, achieve, and become their most amazing selves.

So make it a point to challenge yourself to get back into routines that allow you to follow through on making sure our communications through Skedula and/or Email are thorough and up to date!  All of your advisor colleagues will thank you in advance for making their work that much more meaningful and easy!

Week of March 7th

UAI Staff News

Volume IX
Issue 25
March 7th 2022

Updates To NYCDOE COVID Policies.    As you know, the mayor and chancellor have lifted COVID restrictions in schools.  Inevitably, this will cause anxiety & concern for some while inspiring relief in others.

When COVID first broke in March of 2020, the 7 day average at its peak saw over 5400 new cases daily with an average of 829 deaths each today.  It was a scary time and place.

In the last two years, we have been on a definite roller coaster with this pandemic, but ultimately, one day, like all things, even this pandemic must pass.

Today, we are certainly in a different place with the pandemic than we were when it first broke out, or even where we were in December/January.  Daily infection is very low and the severely sick or dying as a result of COVID infection is very low, particularly among those who are fully vaccinated.

Despite this new reality, folks' anxieties will no doubt remain high.  Please be conscious of that and to the extent possible please be kind and aware of yourself, be sensitive to your colleagues and to your students' concerns as we work through this next transition.  As a reminder,
  • Masks are optional.  There is no longer a mandate to wear masks in schools (except when returning from isolation due to a positive COVID 19 test result).  We cannot ask others to put on their masks.  If folks wish to wear masks (either for themselves or for others), that is ok.  If folks decide not to wear masks, again, that is their choice and is within policy.  Please avoid moves that may unintentionally isolate or malign individual decisions. For example, don't have assigned seats for those with/without masks.  We do not want to set up situations that may unintentionally create a system or situation of inequity or non-inclusion.

As a reminder, you still have the option to remain masked, with KN-95 masks and/or face shields that will continue to be provided by UAI.

  • Physical Distancing is Optional.  You are now free to configure classrooms that maintain 3' distance between students.  You are welcome to maintain your original configurations, but you're also able to shift to more collaborative configurations, now.
We will continue to keep you updated of positive cases and subsequent exposures and isolations as we receive them.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to Kiri, Annie, or Jen with any concerns or questions you may have!

Important dates this month.

  • Monday, 07MAR22:  First Monday of the Month Staff Meeting

  • Advisory will meet twice a week AND Learning Labs will be formed by Advisories

    • This addresses the “teaching familiar kids”

    • Advisors already know their families and their academic history and needs

    • This would also give advisors time to conference with their own kids

  • We will be asking All Advisors to ask Advisory questions at Parent Conferences.

  • Scheduling Committee Members will run Focus Groups on LL and ADV during their own Advisories and Learning Lab

The Hiring Committee.  Our next fair is On March 12, 2022.  Please SHARE OUT THIS FLIER to anyone you know who may be looking for a job in teaching next year!

To Do This Week

PAY ATTENTION TO THE YELLOW HIGHLIGHTS
This is the stuff that requires your attention AND it's stuff you need to do!

Take Skedula Attendance For ALL CLASSES.  Now that we are not asking advisors to make attendance outreach, we are heavily relying on all teachers to accurately take attendance IN SKEDULA.  Now that Skedula is back to working, please make sure that Skedula attendance is accurately reflected for each period.

Celebrate, Validate, and Include.  During outreach time this week, find time to call the homes of at least 5 students who
  • Make you really love coming to UAI everyday AND/OR
  • Have really impressed you in their growth over this year AND/OR
  • Play a strong leadership role in your class or advisory AND/OR
  • Inspire you to be their cheerleader - always AND/OR
  • Do (or are) anything else that inspires you in some way..
Call home.  Share your thoughts with their families.  Focus on the specific concrete examples of how they are wonderful and why they are important to UAI and your class.

Challenge yourself to also think about one thing your most challenging students do that merits a celebration.  Pull them aside in class or in the hall to share it quickly.  Give a call or send a text home to let their family know, too.

Upload Grades into Skedula.  This year, we will not have report cards given out during parent conferences.  Instead (like in the fall), we will be reviewing student progress, using Skedula, to help communicate with families.  Please make sure both your attendance and grades are up today date.  All grades and attendance data MUST BE ACCURATE as of 16MAR, the first of the parent conference dates.
