UAI Celebrations

Final Lap!  This week we welcome June!  It has been a year like no other.  Full of change, this year has been the biggest challenge that UAI has faced to date.  We have come through it and we have are stronger for coming through each of the challenges presented.  As we wrap up 2015-2016, here are a few samples of our achievements!

  • The 9th grade presented with the most disciplinary challenges of any entering freshmen class.  Thanks to the SEL work and dedication of our 9th grade team, this 9th grade is finishing the year with the fewest amount of holdovers or transfers ever in all of UAI's history!
  • As a school goal, we focused on Parent Engagement and Strong School-Family Ties.  This year, we greatly improved our parent survey response rate (up to 58% from 32%).  In addition, our midyear student and parent survey responses showed great improvements.
  • Even though we have lost our partnership with Carrera, the mission continues?  Next year, we are self-funding the mental health component, expanding UAI's counseling staff by hiring Lori as a social worker, and our long-time partner Girls Inc is preparing to take on the Job Club and FLSE components in middle school.

This is just a short sample of the wonderful work we've done this year.  There are so many more achievements to share!  I'm saving the best of them for our June PD day next Thursday!

Wendy did amazing work putting together a press packet for our school.  In it, she highlights some of the wonderful achievements our teachers have made over the years.  I wanted to share with everyone to celebrate our committed and talented family of teachers! Thank you Wendy for putting this together, and thank you all for your continued commitment to improving your pedagogy and for bringing those talents and skills back to our girls at UAI!

Announcements and To Dos

Last Benchmark Entry of the Year! Click HERE to enter the final HS benchmark scores.  We will need to use these scores to make final adjustments to the Regents lists.  Students who score below a 45 will be automatically enrolled in summer school and will sit for the Regent in August.  All other students will be registered for the exam.  Please make sure that your data is uploaded by Friday, 27MAY16.

Begin Planning for Final Exams.  There are only 11 instructional days before High School Final exams and 18 instructional days before Middle School exams.  We are in the home stretch, and we want to make sure that each of these last few instructional days lead our girls to be able to demonstrate their best performances during the final exams.  There are many ways to demonstrate proficiency.  Check out this out-of-the-box final exam structure by CLICKING HERE.  We will be using the benchmark schedule for Final Exams.  Remember, whatever genre you choose, your final exam will only be as good as the expectations you set before the kids.  The more clear you can be in your rubrics, the better your students will understand what to do, and the better they will perform!

MP 5 Failures.  Click Here  for MP5 Failures and PID students. Please make sure that you have spoken to the family members of any students who are currently failing your class.  Sharing the specific goals that you've set with your students is a key step to helping our families support their children.  You should also be specific with parents.  Identify tangible steps they can do to help support the learner.  For example, "Student and I spoke about how she needs to do X, Y, and Z by this date.  Could you help her at home by asking her to show you X, Y, and Z and explain what she learned? Also, it would be really helpful if you kept the due dates on her mind.  For example, put a calendar on the fridge or mirror."  Specificity, achievability - these are two critical components to growth.

Another Wonderful Springfest!  Working with our population of girls, we are often working with them to shore up and build their academic and social emotional deficiencies.  Last Wednesday, we had the opportunity to make time to celebrate and cheer their artistic and entrepreneurial strengths! It was a phenomenal success.  Many thanks to Corinne and Kree from Girls Inc. for coordinating all of our girls performances!  Many thanks and big shout outs to Alison, Kelly, and all the Girls Inc. staff who worked hard with our girls to prepare this wonderful day.  Finally, many thanks to all the staff who showed their support and love for our girls and their families.  Sometimes, simply being there at events like these show our girls how much we do really care!

Announcements and To Dos

Superintendent Walsh (Fred) & Deputy Superintendent Cintron (Richie) Visit on Tuesday Morning.   If you haven't yet had a chance to use the lesson planning tool, please use it for Tuesdays' visit.  There have been two major threads through the last two PPO visits which led to this tool.  First, we need to work on our planning of the whole period - not just the mini-lesson.  Second, we need to plan our reactions to data/information received from students in response to our plans/actions/formative assessments.  "Taking the pulse" is a highly effective practice.  Because we are that awesome and we are a growth mindset school, we need to push ourselves to the next step and plan what we will do in response to what that pulse actually is.  The tool is designed to prompt your thinking around these things and to remind you to plan both academic and SEL objectives.

MP 5 Failures.  Here is the list of MP5 Failures and PID students.  Last week, I asked that if a student is currently failing your course, you should have met with them, set specific goals, and entered the data into Skedula.  I started checking in Skedula on Friday.  I see that some folks have started, but we haven't finished.  Keep working towards updating Skedula.  It's important that we keep families in the loop, particularly when students are failing our classes.  So, please make sure that you have a conversation with the family of any student that is failing your class no later than this Friday, 20MAY.  If you do not make contact by Friday, please reach out to me, Carol, Jen, Val, or Colleen.  We will help you get in touch with someone at home.

UAI Celebrations

Kiri & Her Mom. Omaha, NE ca. 1972
Happy Mother's Day!  These May showers will one day lead to May flowers, hopefully.  Despite the rain and gloom, I do hope you all find ways to celebrate motherhood today.  Whether it is your own mom (or mom figure) or if it is being a mom, motherhood isn't always easy, but it is always worth it.  Mothers are another form of teacher.  Like teachers, they want us to thrive on our own, the sacrifice much so that we can grow, they feel our pain as if it is their own.  Like teachers, mothers make us sometimes learn the hard way because we're too hard-headed to learn otherwise.  Like teachers, mothers are always there, no matter how many times we mess up.  Like teachers, mothers find ways to be proud and celebrate their children.  So, today, celebrate moms!  They are our first and often best teachers!

Announcements and To Dos

MP 5 Failures.  If a student is currently failing your course, please make sure that you have complete the following steps by THIS Friday 13MAY16.

  • Schedule a conference with the student to set up specific, measurable and achievable steps to move the student towards growth (and perhaps actually passing) by the end of the marking period in June.  With 6-7 weeks of school remaining, failing students need specific work plans to continue to remain engaged in your class.  You need to set specific goals (e.g. do XYZ), work plans (by doing this or this) and dates (by this time).   Failing students must have clear SMART goals.
  • Enter the date and SMART goals of this conference into Skedula.
  • Call home and have a person-to-person conversation with the parents to make sure they are aware of student failure in your class and that they understand the goals that were established in the emergency conference.  The easiest way to do this is to call the parent together with the student.  If you are comfortable, you can call the parents together at the end of the conference.  Or, you can reach out to admin or Carol to support you making the call.  Once complete, enter this call and the outcomes of the conversation with parents into Skedula.
When students fail, they don't learn.  When students don't learn, we aren't educating.  As high quality educators, we take all the steps we can to make sure students have every opportunity to learn.  The steps I listed above are the steps we will need to take with our girls who struggle the most!  Let's keep trying to find her path to success!

NOTE:  In a normal distribution, no more than 10% of your class should be failing.  So, if you have 100 students, you should have to make no more than 10 calls this week (or 2 calls per day this week).  If you have more than that number failing, there is something wrong.  Reach out to admin or peer coaches for support to get support and/or fresh eyes to find solutions that can work.

Spring Units.  Only a few of you have uploaded your Spring Unit Arcs.  Please upload your spring unit arcs to THIS FOLDER by tomorrow 10MAY16 at 3PM.  Be sure to include your current unit arc, too.   When saving, please use this nomenclature: Course Name_YOUR NAME_Unit Name. We are gathering units for preparation for June PD planning.

New Lesson Planning Tool.  If you haven't yet had a chance to play around with the new planning tool, you can download the template here.  Once you've used it, please share your lesson HERE and share your comments on the template.  I've heard from a couple of you already, and am always looking for more voices.  Please try to use the tool for any single lesson by this Friday 13MAY16.  This (or an iteration of it) will likely be the tool we all use for planning next year.  All staff will be expected to apply this tool (or incorporate each component of the tool into a planning template of their choice). So, please use the tool and express your voice in the comments if you would like to have a say in how this tool should be used/edited.  I'm asking for your input now. Please share it!

Springfest.  This Wednesday, 11MAY16,  is our annual Springfest.  It is our celebration of student arts and activities in after school.  Last year, we asked staff attend Springfest in fulfillment of the new contractual evening conference time in May.  It was wonderful for our students and families to see so many staff supporting & celebrating our girls.  This year, we are following the Middle School calendar date of May 11th for this assigned time this year, again.  At UAI, we turn these two additional parent nights into celebrations of UAI.  The first in September is our annual Curriculum Night.  This second, will always be Springfest.  I look forward to seeing everyone there on Wednesday night!

UAI Celebrations

April Assembly Awesomeness! Tracy, Sursattie, and Kelly coordinated yet another phenomenal assembly for our school community.  The girls shared their art, music, dance and poetry as we came together as a full school once again.  Our older girls readily encouraged our shier middle schoolers as they bravely read their work in front of nearly 500 of their peers.   This message of sisterhood and this show of how our girls can come together to celebrate each other is sometimes too rare.  As we enter into our final units of the year, look back at how our girls supported each other at this celebration. Plan small ways to have the girls honor each other each day.  By helping our girls articulate the hows and whys of strength, we help them become stronger, smarter, and more bold!

College Match Day with FLOTUS.  As part of the Reach Higher Initiative, First Lady Michelle Obama celebrated College Match Day (traditionally May 1st, but that's a Sunday) in Harlem.  Over the spring break, Girls Inc. brought our juniors and seniors to the event to celebrate their future steps!  This year our girls are going to NYU, SUNY Stonybrook, Queens College, City College, Baruch, SUNY Oswego, and many more.  As the class of 2016 enters college, they will encounter our founding class of 2013 as seniors at these universities.  It took some time, but our girls are slowly but surely building a network and a community of UAI alumni!  True change takes time.  We are just beginning to really see how much and how far we have come since we began over 10 years ago in a tiny little red school house in Crown Heights!  Congratulations to our girls and congratulations to UAI!

Announcements and To Dos

Monday's Town Hall Meeting.  In place of Pods and Team meetings on Monday, we will be having a town hall meeting to review discipline and the efficacy of the systems we have in place.  To prepare for that, please reflect on discipline in your class this year.  Come to Monday's meeting prepared to share your thoughts, raise questions, and pose ideas for solutions.  We will be taking these ideas into the UAI retreat with the Urban Assembly on Friday & Saturday.  Coaches and Admin will be attending the retreat.  If you are interested finalizing the agenda, please join our meeting on Thursday in room 403 at 3PM! Here's the summary of staff opinions around discipline from the survey I put out a few weeks ago, and here are some prompts to consider for Monday's:
  • The Behavior Reminder System is not working.  Students are being removed from classes at higher rates than last year.  What are some of the reasons do you think it is not working?  What changes would you make to fix it? OR If you think the whole system is flawed, what could replace it?
  • Deans and Admin are being called to classrooms to remove students for disrespectful but non-disruptive behaviors (e.g. won't take off hat, won't put away phone, won't lift head off of desk). In your opinion, should we continue this practice?  Why or why not?
  • The foundation of strong classroom management is having a healthy relationship with students.  How do you build relationships with your students?  How do you ensure that students feel heard by you and that they understand how much you care about them?
  • We follow the Citywide Discipline Code with respect to student discipline.  We could definitely get better at this.  What suggestions do you have to improve our implementation of the code?
Please DO bring your own questions, comments, and insights to the meeting.  We will be doing a combination of small and large group discussion and we will also be collecting individual responses. We're trying to maximize input from all and varying the format is our plan to make this happen!

Spring Units.  In preparation for the June PD date and in preparation for this weekend's retreat with instructional coaches, I'm collecting your Spring units.  Please upload your spring unit arcs to THIS FOLDER.  Be sure to include your current unit arc, too.   When saving, please use this nomenclature: Course Name_YOUR NAME_Unit Name.

New Lesson Planning Tool.  I've asked Jamie and Danielle to construct a lesson planning tool that helps us really think through the entire period.  Check out Jamie's sample lesson (Thank you Danielle & Jamie!)  I will be asking each of you to try out this format and give feedback on using it to plan your lesson.  It will not be a mandatory template, but rather, it is designed to be used as a tool to facilitate your lesson planning.  So, to optimize utility, we need your insight! Pick a lesson from this week and use the lesson planning tool to layout your objectives and assessments for each of the formats, paying attention to both content and SEL objectives.   You can download the template here.  Once you've used it, please share your lesson HERE and share your comments on the template.  Please try to use the tool for any single lesson by Friday.  We will be taking a look at the materials uploaded to the folder this weekend.
