Short Announcement Today.  I'm super sick today.  So the message is gonna be short.  I guess I couldn't avoid the bug!  I'm still finalizing the Friday Schedule for Regents. Bear with me.  I'm moving slow today.

I did make some changes to the regents program based on attendance and testing needs (I forgot to make Read Aloud rooms on Tuesday & Wednesday and I JUST caught that!).    So, please take another look at the schedule to see what your program is for the week.

MS Planning days will coincide with HS planning days (Except for MS math because our day will be next week!).  I've made some updates to the program, but admittedly, I have a foggy cold brain.  So, please make sure to double and triple check your schedule to make sure it makes sense!

UPCOMING DATES
  • MON 20Jan - MLK Jr. Day, NO SCHOOL

  • TUE 21Jan - FRI 24Jan - Regents Week
    • Tuesday 21JAN -          9AM:  ELA & Earth Practicum    1PM:  Earth Science
      • Also this is senior picture day for 8th & 12th graders
    • Wednesday 22JAN -     9AM:  Geometry/US History        1PM:  Algebra 1
    • Thursday 23JAN -        9AM:  Global                                 1PM:  Algebra 2
    • Friday 24JAN -             9AM:  Living Environment
  • THU 23JAN - Grades Due
    • All grades MUST be entered into GAMA no later than 3PM on Thursday 23JAN.

  • MON 27JAN - Chancellor PD Day
    • Agenda Coming Soon - Remote PD Day

  • TUE 28JAN - First Day of Spring Term

  • WED 29JAN - Lunar New Year

TO DO THIS WEEK
  • Review Regents Schedule in Class & Post on Google Classroom.  Also, please make time to review the Regents Schedule.  As a rule of thumb, only 10-12 graders are sitting for exams.  If there needs to be a change to what students are registered to take, they should see Ms. Jennifer.

If you have a 9th grader who wishes to retake, please sit down and talk to them to assess readiness.  Please do NOT send 9th graders to me or Jennifer.  They should talk to their teacher first.  If they are ready, then the teachers should reach out directly to Jennifer to get the student registered.

  • Finish All other Grading and Update GAMA.  By now, all grading in your course except for benchmarks should be complete so that kids have an accurate idea of what their grade is going into this summative exam.  Please make sure to hit the refresh button in GAMA (TeachHub) so that those grades get pulled from your google classroom. If you need help, please reach out to your ILT.

  • Contact Homes of Kids who are not yet >80.  Before benchmarks, please reach out to all families of kids who have not yet reached the 80 mark in your class.  Let families and kids know what they should be doing to move the needle towards 80 (or actually get there if they can) by optimizing their performance on the benchmark.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • Summer School Planning is StartingSummer school planning is beginning.  We will not be hosting Girls Inc and DYCD summer camp this summer, and our students who need an all-day placement can register for DYCD programs at the Montauk School this summer.

We are currently looking for folks who are interested in doing some enrichment work (6-12) this summer.  AND we will also have regents prep this summer.  If you are interested in working this summer, please complete THIS FORM no later than 14FEB.

Final Week of MP2.  Sometimes the days and weeks seem to stretch on forever, and then you shake your head, blink your eyes, and boom - half the year is done!  This is the final week of the fall term.  As we wrap up the fall and pivot to the spring, it's important to make time to pause and reflect on the fall thus far.
  • Joy, Relationships & School Culture.  Last week's activities which culminated in our first ever homecoming dance was a perfect example of how far we've come this year in spreading joy in our school.  So many thanks to Shan's stewardship and to Marsha, Patricia, Sarah, and EVERYONE who helped make last week so much fun (I know I'm probably forgetting some folks, but I don't have everyone's names who helped - nonetheless - you are also appreciated!!).   Similarly, the Middle School team has been working overtime to bring so many different joyful events to our youngest ones all year long!  On top of all of this, many more folks than in years past stepped forward to run after school clubs and give our students experiences and activities that they both want and enjoy!

This year, the overwhelming majority of folks are working outside of their instructional responsibilities to enhance the culture and joy of UAI.  It has made the school warmer and the job a lot more fun.  Your work may never be accurately measured by a stat or an exam, but the work you do to breath joy into our community is resonantly felt every single day!

  • Rigor, Challenge & Collaboration.  The Instructional Rounds and Learning Huddles we've done this past fall exemplify our community's commitment to pushing the envelope and trying to find ways to make sure that all of our students thrive.  We do not always have the answers, and some of our kiddos pose particularly challenging puzzles, but this year we have been moving steadily in tandem to test as many solution-ideas as we can.

We still have many hills to climb and scores & target rates to achieve, but we are finding ways to connect with one another so that we are not trying to solve these conundrums in isolation.  We are using our UAI hive mind to source answers and perspectives, and with our collective mind, I am excited to see what we're able to achieve this year!

  • Equity, Structures, and Community Connection.   Through all of our work, we are still working to make sure we move our practice with a lens on equity.  Our RPET has taken on two major tasks of lifting up cultures through celebrations and is beginning to take on building trust and strengthening community connection for the upcoming term.  By finding ways to level up our community interactions and cultivate more shared expectations, the RPET looks to work along side each one of us to find ways to make working together more inclusive, trusting, and as a result, impactful!

  • Power, Student & Staff Voice, Leadership, & Mission.  Finally, the most inspirational work of the fall has been the work that folks have done to lift up student voice.  Shan, Marsha, Sue, Amanda, and Kelly have done incredible work with student government, the Youth Leadership Council, and the National Honors Society this year.  Through this work, students have found ways to exercise their own self-determination and with the support of their amazing teachers, they are doing excellent work to give back to one another and to our school.  I'm getting a little choked up here just typing it!! It's absolutely beautiful work!  Thank you all!!

As we close out this last week of the fall, make sure to make your own time to appreciate your own personal achievements.  Share with your class your own reflections of the work they've done this fall and how that has impacted your class overall!  Time is never our friend, but creating space to celebrate our achievements is an integral part of making sure we continue to have them!  So, reflect, celebrate and get ready for an even more amazing spring term!

UPCOMING DATES

TO DO THIS WEEK
  • Review Benchmark Schedule in Class & Post on Google Classroom.   Please see the "HS Benchmark" Tab on the UAI Schedule to see the lists (you'll need to request access to see the lists or ask your ILT lead to share) and schedule for this week.  Please review the schedule with each of your sections so they know which room/proctor to go to.  The lists are also posted on the walls on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors.  Please also make sure to send messages home (you can use GAMA) to remind kids and families that benchmarks are major assessment grades and they cannot miss the exams or be late to school that day!  REMINDER:  there are no benchmarks on Wednesday, giving folks time for a break and catchup where needed.

  • Review Regents Schedule in Class & Post on Google Classroom.  Also, please make time to review the Regents Schedule.  As a rule of thumb, only 10-12 graders are sitting for exams.  If there needs to be a change to what students are registered to take, they should see Ms. Jennifer.

Wrapping up the Fall with Rigor & Joy.  We have just 10 school days remaining in the Fall term and Homecoming week is THIS WEEK!

The end of the fall term marks the midpoint of the year.  It is also a crucial point for students in their academic progress.  This midpoint is the perfect place to lean into positive habits and isolate and correct any bad ones.  All students want to thrive, and they rely on you, their teachers and guides, to find the ways to do their best.

Make sure that your communication with kids is super clear and that you are being upfront and honest with them.  The truth may definitely be the case that the level of work may be above their current level of performance, but they need to know that and they need to know that you are in their corner, and you are committed to helping them close those gaps and reach (or surpass) your expectations!  Be clear that it will take work on their end, but that you have confidence in their ability to start making strong, small BUT consistent gains that will result in big growth.

At the same time we push our kids to study hard and end the term strong, we also want to lift up and celebrate joy with them.  Homecoming is such a cultural staple of adolescence.  The kids are thrilled that we are holding one (Shan- the rock star brain genius got this up off the ground!  Thank you Shan!!).  Thank you also the all the kids and teachers who pitched in to make this a memorable and joyous experience for our kids!  Special shout outs to Marsha, Patricia Gy, Sarah M., Jen, Annie, and our UAI Student Government, and thank you to ALL of our dance chaperones.  Shanice, Marsha, Patricia G., Sarah M., Yasmeen, Mahjabeen, Elena, Brenda, Phillan, and Kelly!

Important Upcoming Dates

    • Monday 06JAN.  Double Huddle - We'll be doing our Huddles During PD time in January to give back some OPW time.  We're still trying to figure out what works best, but we're taking feedback from folks and balancing school needs to try to find the best time that works!  This test will be in PD time!

    • Monday 06JAN - Friday 17JAN.  Student Perception Survey Week & MAP Testing

    • Monday 13JAN - Friday 17JAN.  Benchmark Week for 8-12.

    • Monday 20JAN - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - NO SCHOOL

    • Tuesday 21JAN-Friday 24JAN - Regents Week - No Classes for grades 9-12 (8th Spec. Sched)

    Announcements & To Dos

    Student Perception Survey.
It's time for the official Student Perception Survey! The 6-7 grade team is handling their own surveys but here's the plan for 8-12 grade. Since kids don't move in the same groups all day, surveys will be administered for teachers during their regular class. In order to ensure anonymity and ethical administration, teachers cannot proctor their own surveys.

As a result, teachers will be partnered up and switch rooms for the first 15 mins of class during the assigned survey period. The schedule can be found in the UAI schedule under the tab, "SPS Schedule".  ELA and Breadth switched days due to a schedule conflict just FYI.   We will review logistics and hand out codes during Monday PD time but feel free to peruse the attached materials before then.

MAP Testing.  For this administration (and likely the last one in May), we'll be switching the proctoring slightly.  It seems that when their own teachers give the MAP, kids take it more seriously.  So, we're going to move MAP testing into the Math & ELA classes.
    • MS Will hold MAP ELA/MATH in Class during the week of January 13th
    • 8-12 ELA will hold MAP In their classes this week (week of 06JAN)
    • 10-12 Math will hold MAP in their classes this week (week of 06JAN)
    • 8-9 Math with hold MAP on Tuesday or Thursday This week -
      • Tuesday 07JAN -
        • 89.1 Algebra 1
          • Brett & Sue in Room 403 - 2nd period
          • JRob & Camryn - Come to 403 - 3rd Period
        • 89.2 Geometry
          • Amanda in Room 407 - 2nd Period
          • Thomas C & Crystal - Come to 407 - 3rd Period
        • 89.3 Algebra 1
          • Jasmine in Room 405 - 2nd Period
          • Shan & Pauline - Come to 405 - 3rd Period

      • Thursday 09JAN -
        • 89.4 Algebra 1
          • Amanda & Sue in Room 407 - 2nd Period
          • Thomas C & Crystal - Come to 407 - 3rd Period
        • 89.5 Algebra
          • Jasmine in Room 403 - 2nd Period
          • JRob & Camryn - Come to 405 - 3rd Period

Benchmark Testing.  To prepare for the next benchmark you should be scheduling a "practice" assessment this week (or something before your benchmark happens).  Kids need to experience what they would score on a benchmark with enough time to make corrections and learn before the final, summative assessment.  You want test corrections and learning to happen BEFORE the final exam, not after it.  So please make sure to give that opportunity before next weeks' exams (Mon- ELA, Tue- MAT, Thu - SCI, Fri - SOC).  Breadth final exams should happen in regularly scheduled classes.  Please see the Benchmark Tab in the UAI Schedule to see the specific testing schedule for next week.  I'm still finishing Thursday & Friday, but that should be done by EOD Monday!

Grades & Outreach.  Please make sure that your grades are up to date and that your students have a clear picture of where they stand in your class before next week's benchmarks.  Make sure you are clear with them about what they need to do to reach (or move closer) to the goal of getting an 80 or higher in your class.  Make sure to also call or message homes so that everyone is on the same page.  The 2nd MP grades will be the grades we use to target Spring Interventions, so please make sure parents and families hear from you first before we start mailing home intervention and promotion-in-doubt letters in February.

PID (promotion-in-doubt) letters will be sent home for any and all students who meet any or all of the following:
    • Failed one or more class
    • Have <90% Average Daily Attendance Rate
    • Is Late to school 3 or more days per week on average
    • Is behind in Regents exams (so any senior who still needs an exam to graduate, any junior who has yet to pass at least 1 science, 1 math, 1 social studies, and ela), any sophomore who has yet to pass at least 1 science, 1 social studies, and 1 math

    Regents Week Schedule.
Please take a look at the Regents schedule  both for kids who are registered (please review with them in your classes) and for yourselves (there are late schedules).  Please make sure you reach out to Kiri no later than EOD on Monday 06JAN if there are any conflicts.  The DOE doesn't like links with all access, so if you can't access the schedule, just request access and I'll give it to you!
