Calendar Updates. Once again, I do apologize for the inbox inundation.  However, via your UAI Gmail and Google Calendar, you have access to all the important dates for the year (marking periods, assessments, meetings, dances, etc.).  If you're new to Google Calendars, ask one of your team mates for assistance (Brodie is particularly well-versed on the app) or enjoy this wonderful tutorial video that I googled for you.

Moving forward, I'll continue to invite you to important upcoming school events so that they get added to your uainstitute.org calendars.  So, make sure you get your calendars up and running if you haven't done so already!

Meet our New High School Staff.  Please join me in welcoming (and welcoming back) some wonderful people who are joining our staff this year.

Former Student Teachers...Both Kerry Smith and Anna Avino were former student teachers at UAI. We are happy to welcome Kerry (student taught with Colleen & Rebecca and filled in for Rebecca during her leave!) back to the high school as our 9th grade ISS teacher.  After several years away, Anna (former student teacher of Senior Andres and Ms. Liz) returns to teach our 11th graders in their 3rd year of Spanish.

Seasoned professionals... Both Kristin Negele and Paula Collins join us from Open Market.  Both have extensive experience at other DOE public schools and have developed a pedagogy and philosophy that fit perfectly with Learning Cultures at UAI.  Both Kristin and Paula join our 10th and 11th/12th grade teams, respectively as our newest ISS teachers.

Carrera Partners...Our Carrera staff remains consistent for the high school with some new configurations.  Some middle school staff join the high school this year, as well.  Our Carrera team this year is as follows:
9th Grade:  Bree Aitore (Social Worker); Rebecca Bunten (FLSE); Demetris Iannou (Job Club); Heather Bezdecheck (Academic)

10th Grade: Sara Monsonis (Social Worker); Jen Batson (FLSE); Demetris Iannou (Job Club);  Heather Bezdecheck (Academic)
11th Grade:  Lori Lindenbaum(Social Worker); Wazina Zondon (FLSE): Ruben Rivera (Job Club): Jillian Crowther (Academic)
12th Grade: Shannon Riley & Marni Brand (Social Workers); Jen Batson & Wazina Zondon (FLSE); Ruben Rivera (Job Club); Tyasia Harvey (Academic)

Chris Maestro (Carrera Director); and Haelin Seu (Medical Support) are also with Carrera again this year.  Carrera has moved to room 201 (with FLSE in Room 404 and the Academic Team in 402).

Girls Inc. Partners... Girls Inc is also returning with a wide variety of opportunities for our young women.  Nicole Souvenir will be coordinating Girls Inc Day Time and After school programs.  Tiffani Credle and Rhonda Remy return to provide Girls Inc Programming both in the day and after school to our young women.  This year, GIrls Inc High School will be in B35.

2nd Annual UAI Teacher' Choice.  All high school teachers will be reimbursed up to $250 for supplies spent for the classroom.  All receipts are due to Del no later than October 31st.  Classrooms will be equipped with basic supplies (dry erase markers, chalk, staplers, tape, and 1 box of paper.  Grade teams will be given time to develop grade-wide supplies lists for students to be distributed on the first day of school.   The lists must be limited to no more than $40 per student and must include:  1 ream of paper; a red hand-in folder, and pens/pencils.  The grade team must agree on one universal list of supplies.

UAI High School Staff News

Issue 2
Week of August, 2014

Announcements

The Weekly Newsletter is Back! After a brief summer hiatus, the UAI staff newsletter is back in action.  This year's issues will be separated into separate Middle and High School letters.  This letter is specifically for High School news.  Like last year, you can expect this letter to be issued weekly on Sunday afternoons to prep you for the week ahead.  This particular issue will be longer than usual because it's been a while and we have some catching up to do!

(ignore the 2013)
Summer School is Over! Another session of summer school wraps up tomorrow as we finish grading the high school regents exams.  Many thanks to our summer school troupers Mike, Michael, Jamie, Doris, and Damon who stepped up to help our young women have a second chance at regents and grade promotion. Also many thanks to our returning coaches Marianna & Darby who worked with summer school teachers during summer residencies to deepen their learning of this type of PD support while providing aid and support to the summer school staff.  Martine and Danielle, two of our new rising coaches, also stepped up to support the Learning Cultures Institutes in creating lab spaces for our newest LC teachers to learn the formats.  It was a fruitful and busy summer! Please enjoy these remaining days of summer. You deserve every minute!

3rd Annual Learning Cultures Institutes.  Each year, the Learning Cultures schools come together to have two series of professional development institutes.  The first being for returning LC teachers and school leaders to hone and deepen practice.  The second being to introduce teacher new to LC to the formats and theories underlying the model.  This summer, the first 2 weeks of August had over 40 teachers, school leaders, and coaches from four different schools participating and networking.  Many thanks to Sarah Dennis and Sabina (of the Unison School) for coordinating and planning these wonderful experiences and perspective shifting discourse!

Gearing up for Next Year.  Understandably, many of you are looking forward to getting into your classrooms.  Officially, you will have some time on both the 2nd and 3rd of September to set up your rooms.  Coaches and leads will meet on August 25th & 26th to finalize agendas, but you will have some time to do room set up. However, if you're interested in getting in sooner, the building will be officially open to you from 8:30-4PM starting on Monday 25AUG through Friday 29AUG.  The building will also be open on Saturday, 30AUG for you.  I will be in the building Monday through Friday of that week, and classrooms will be open.  Additionally, elevators will be open so you won't need your passes.  Like last year, you will receive your DOE teacher's choice ($77 this year) plus $250 from UAI High School to spend on whatever you'd like for your classrooms.  For the UAI $250, you will be reimbursed up to $250 for any supply for which you submit receipts.  ALL RECEIPTS for the UAI teacher's choice MUST BE SUBMITTED TO DEL NO LATER THAN 31OCT14.

Next week - Look forward to the brand new and super fancy UAI Staff handbook!  This digitized reference will serve as an excellent resource for all policies and logistics that you need to know at UAI.

Week of July 7th

UAI High School Staff News

Issue 1
Week of July 7th, 2014

Announcements

Summer School Starts! Monday, 07JUL14 is the first day of summer school.  This year, high school summer school will be held on the UAI garden level.  Jamie will be teaching math in Room B43, Micheal Stuart will be teaching Global Humanities in Room B45, Damon will be teaching Living Environment in B57, Doris will be teaching US Humanities in B53, and Mike Somersel will be working with our seniors who have yet to graduate to get them through their remaining Regents exams.  As an FYI, Phillan will be teaching the middle school out of B49 for the summer.  Ms. Channay will be in B31, and Girls Inc & Carrera will be operating elective High School summer programs out og B35, 404, and 402. Summer school runs Mondays through Thursdays 8:30-12:30.  There are 2 two-hour sections.   Summer school runs Monday 07JUL through Tuesday, 12AUG, with Regents exams on Wednesday, 13AUG and Thursday 13AUG.  Summer school runs only Mondays through Thursdays.  Summer school teachers can find their class lists by CLICKING HERE.  There will be changes as we iron out the usual start up wrinkles in every term.

Summer School Nuts and Bolts.  Kiri will be in on Monday to launch summer school.  Jen C. will be supervising UAI summer school from Tuesday, 08JUL through Tuesday 15JUL and Val will step in to supervise on Wednesday & Thursday 16&17JUL.  Kiri will be back on Monday 21JUL to supervise the remainder of High School summer school.  Channay in B31 (ext.83121) will be your point person for unlocking the bathroom for students, monitoring hall passing, and general dean support.  Carol will also be available for support in outreach to homes.  Additionally, Anthony Comuniello (Assistant Principal for all Summer Schools), and Aretha Jones (summer school secretary for all 7 summer schools in the building) will be providing additional support to all summer schools.

Summer Instructional Points.  All classes need to launch responsibility teams this summer, focusing on the Regents exam (the majority of students are in summer school for Regent exams, and of those who need credit, they overwhelmingly also need the Regent exam).  On the first day of summer school, you should plan to give a diagnostic exam, which can be the Regent they just took in June.  Channay has copies available to you in the main office.   Unison Reading Groups and Conferences need to begin on the 2nd day.  Marianna and Darby are working with Jamie and Micheal, respectively, to help them set up their rooms as strong Learning Cultures classrooms.  So do stop by for ideas or help.  With a two-hour block, class structure should look something like this

  • 20 Min - Mini Lesson #1
  • 50 Min - Independent Work Time
          - 15 Min Unison Reading
          - 10 Min Conference #1
          - 10 Min Conference #2
          - 15 Min Learning Group/Table Share/another Unison/More Conferences (Teacher's Choice)
  • 10 Min - Share #1
  • 10 Min - Mini Lesson #2
  • 25 Min - Independent Work Time
          - 15 min Unison Reading
          -  10 Min Conference #3
  • 5 Min - Share #2

Summer School classes are strictly Pass/Fail, so final grades are only going to be P or F.  Schedula has been loaded for summer school and is up and running.  So, you'll need to use Schedula as your primary grading application this symmer.  Allan will be here on Monday 07JUL and maybe on Tuesday, depending on how much he needs to be here for set up.  You can use real numbers in Schedula, but when final upload comes, the grade must be P/F.

There is some paper available, at least enough to start each one of your with a ream or two.  I just put in an order for 7 more boxes.  That way each of you will have a box for the summer.  You should be set for all other materials from existing school year materials.

Mid Year Meetings

Mid Year Meetings

Now that we are officially launched into the 2nd semester, it's time to reflect. The agenda for these meetings will be the same and the goal is to talk about your teaching performance thus far and goals for the spring term.

The Agenda

  • Teacher reflection on progress towards goals (10min)(both school & teacher goals set at the beginning of the year).
How well are you progressing?  What are your proudest achievements thus far?  What are you currently working on? What have been your biggest struggles?

Describe to me your progress towards meeting your goals (either the goals established at the beginning of the year or the goals that developed via our conference check ins - your choice). Bring with you some artifacts that demonstrate your growth (can be anything you choose, student work, conference record, assessment performance, etc).

Show me what standards you've covered to date (via any format - lesson, CUR, conference, share, learning group). This can be in any format of your choosing but should reflect the standards already covered and the standards yet to be covered. (again - something I can keep)- this can be a simple checklist (with dates taught and assessment used to measure mastery - e.g. unit exam, writing assignments, project, etc.)
  • Teacher reflection on student response to intervention (10min)
Bring me a copy of your Unison Reading and Conference Tallies along with a sample of a conference record and unison reading record that best exemplifies the quality of CUR and your conferences. Please show me the tally breakout by marking period so that we can look at your growth over time together. Please bring me physical or digital copies that I can keep.

Share with me your plans for addressing student failure in the classroom. What interventions did you try this past fall? To what extent did they succeed/fail? What's your plan for making sure the kids who failed in January have sufficient interventions to get back on track by June? Please bring me a copy of student work that you think best exemplifies your struggle and/or your successes with interventions and student failure.
  • Admin reflection on Teacher progress (10min)
Review of Teacher Evaluation Rubrics and Conference Check-ins
Review of Teacher data (Course Passing Rates, Benchmark Assessment Growth)
Review of Teacher conference check-in goals and achievements

Also for you at this review, we'll go over the ratings that have been officially entered as part of your evaluation thus far. Again, this is a conversation. If at any point you want to have a rating removed, we can redo that particular visit. In the end, the focus is to improve your skills and pedagogy. The better you do, the better you rate! We all want everyone to be their best possible for our girls.
  • Spring Goal Setting and Next Steps (10min)
At the end of the conversation, you'll be making goals for the spring term. In addition to your own growth goals, please keep in mind the school goals from the beginning of the year. Think about what you need to meet both individual and school goals and what focus (or foci) would best help you get there.
Please do not spend time making everything look pretty. This is primarily a conversation coupled with artifacts to help illustrate your points.  If Nicia is your observing supervisor, I'm gonna ask to join in these reviews with her so we can better align our expectations with one another (it's a thing we're on about this semester), and so that both of us know what's happening with all the high school folks. Thanks everyone!
