Teaching Active Listening Skills through Unison and the Mini-Lesson

The rules and expectations of the formats are built-in strategies designed to help students build effectively SEL skills.  Let's examine the expectations of the Mini-Lesson

Students are engaged and attentive

  • Students use their EARS (active listening skills)
    • Make Eye contact (Face Forward)
    • Be sure to Ask questions and Acknowledge what you hear
    • Try to Reflect or Rephrase what you think the other person is feeling
    • Take the time to Say or rephrase what you hear to check to see if you understand

Student participation is evenly distributed

  • Students use their Collaborative Communication Skills (See Below)
Teacher monitors student understanding 
  • Teachers use formative assessment
Teacher quickly and efficiently addresses student misbehaviors
  • Use your EARS (active listening skills)
    • Make Eye contact
    • Be sure to Ask questions and Acknowledge what you hear
    • Try to Reflect or Rephrase what you think the other person is feeling
    • Take the time to Say or rephrase what you hear to check to see if you understand

Be in Unison


  • Read aloud in a tone so that everyone can hear
  • Reason together.  Be sure to follow the conversation and stay together on a topic/idea.

Breach, or stop the group, if you have something to say, can't hear someone, or have something to say.

  • Provide Equal Opportunities to Speak
  • Perspective Shift (be open-minded to the opinions of others)
  • Speak your truth! (Don't be afraid to say what is on your mind)
  • Use your EARS (active listening skills)
    • Make Eye contact
    • Be sure to Ask questions and Acknowledge what you hear
    • Try to Reflect or Rephrase what you think the other person is feeling
    • Take the time to Say or rephrase what you hear to check to see if you understand
  • Disagree without being disagreeable
    • Choose respectful communication (word choice, voice tone, body language)
    • Address the issue without attacking the person.
    • Actively Listen to others' perspectives when disagreeing
    • Manage your emotions (anger, stress, anxiety)
    • Propose a compromise

Be Promotive (be helpful, considerate, supportive of everyone in your group).


  • Presume positive intent (approach communication presuming the best of others)
  • Disagree without being disagreeable
  • Use Accountable Talk Stems:
    • I agree with_____________________because ____________________
    • I disagree with _______________________ because ____________________
    • I like what you said about _________________________. I think___________
    • I heard you say _________________________
    • I believe ________________
