Collaborative Reasoning Groups

Collaborative Reasoning Group Rules

  1. Read aloud in sync.
  2. Breach.
  3. Use Accountable Talk

Read aloud in sync.

Whenever there is text to read, students should read the text aloud together.  In order to read aloud in sync, students have to attend to both their own voices and the voices of their peers. The first step to collaboration is to attune to other perspectives.  Reading aloud is primes the group to prepare for this.

Breach.

Active reading requires thinking.  Asking questions, making inferences, drawing conclusions, or making observations are critical to intellectually engaging with the task or text.  Additionally, a variety of complex breaches will increase student comprehension and engagement in the group and the text/task.  Using tools like DOK question stems will provide a scaffold for students.

Use Accountable Talk.

Student interactions in CR groups must be positive.  However, not all students have mastered the tools of promotive communication.  Accountable Talk Stems are scaffolds to help students develop the communication skills required for collaborating effectively.
