Effective CR Groups

Effectively using Accountable Talk Stems to Support Collaborative Reasoning

Goals:  
  • Teachers will understand how the rules of collaborative reasoning groups promote student collaboration, thinking, and social emotional growth.
  • Teachers will be able to plan for and effectively execute CR groups, regularly.
  • Teachers will understand how to effective CR groups to improve student capacity to pose questions and hold discussions.

Agenda - 9:15-11:45

[10 min] Reviewing Collaborative Reasoning Rules and Reasons

    • Think [2 min]-Pair[3min]-Share[5min] - Reading Aloud
      • When you facilitate collaborative reasoning groups, do you always have students read text aloud and in sync? Why or why not?
        • Why do we ask anyone read aloud?  What do we as their teachers gain from it? What do they as students gain from it?
        • What are some of the benefits of reading out loud? What are some of the drawbacks?
        • What are some of the benefits/drawbacks of not reading in aloud together?

[20 min] Mock Collaborative Reasoning Group

    • The Groups
      • Ilyana (facilitator), Matthew & Mike (participants), Tiffany & Cherry (observers)
      • Danielle (facilitator), Damon & Joanna (participants), Martine&Brodie (observers)
      • Alison (facilitator), Phillan & Kerry (participants), Lauren & Marsha (observers)
    • The Protocol [10min]
      • Facilitators will run the group as a first-time student group
      • Participants will adopt the role of students and play the part throughout the group
      • Observers will take notes on the moves and comments of the group. 
        • One person will track the facilitator moves
        • One person will track the student moves
    • The Debrief [10 min]
      • How many different DOK levels were represented by "student" breaches?
      • How did the facilitator prompt "students" to make higher level DOK breaches?
      • How did the facilitator make sure the group spent time in productive struggle vs. unproductive struggle?
      • What did the facilitator learn about the "students’" learning through this group?
    • Whole Group Share [10 min]
